07:15 AM ET 05.03 | The second season saw its most gruesome hit Thursday night, perhaps leading to some time off for Ottawa Senators defenseman Eric Gryba. The NHL has scheduled a disciplinary hearing for [Gryba] on Friday for his hit on Lars Eller of the Montreal Canadiens in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series. ... Eller was taken off the ice on a stretcher after landing face-first following the hit. He was expected to spend the night at the hospital with head and facial injuries, according to the Canadiens. The following grounds for potential supplemental discipline are being considered: Illegal check to the head. However, the Department of Player Safety retains the right to make adjustments to these infractions.

Exactly. And as many have said, you also learn not to make that pass (looking at you #61)

The announcers called it a "suicide" pass.

It's only suicide if you take it...

Fans and blood on the ice made that call. Should not have even been a penalty unless you can send Diaz to the box for intent to injure his own player

Here ya go Spiny....

I watched it frame by frame a number of times last night and still dont see the penalty

Looked like primary, or at least initial, contact was to the head. If Gryba hits him lower the kid probably still goes out on a stretcher, but it would be harder for Shanny to suspend him. They gave Ferrence a game this one might go 2.

My take, (now that I've sen it...)
A hard legal hit (seemed to be shoulder)
I agree with MHWINGS...fans and blood made that call.
Terrible pass both to make and to take.

Looked to me like his head snapped around first. I dunno, the blood alone is probably good enough for a game suspension.

After the hit, I was thinking -- thank goodness it wasnt Scott Stevens that drilled --the kid might never play again. Boy o Boy could that man lay on a heavy center ice check

My question is how pissed do you think Maclean would've been had Ottawa not come back to win?

if it was Stevens, it would have been an elbow and all the sycophants would have said how great it was.

A brutally hard but legal hit.

I agree with most here. I saw from all angles in slo mo and was finding it hard to find where he got smacked.

But with all those facial injuries it was obviously to the head so it should be a foul.

I was wondering if his visor came down and cut him? Or when he face plopped?
