Why Saban really wants a nine-game SEC slate

07:12 AM ET 05.03 | Since the SEC expanded to 14 schools, Alabama head coach Nick Saban has been vocal in his support for a nine-game conference football schedule. [Saban] reiterated his support for it during a Crimson Caravan stop in Mobile on Thursday. Saban's support for a nine-game conference slate stems from his belief that players ought to be able to play against every other team in the conference during their college careers. But he also alluded to the fact that schedule strength may become increasingly important with college football's impending move to a four-team playoff with a selection committee. "I personally feel like strength of schedule is going to be a real important thing in the future," he said.

They should make it 10 games and drop the annual FCS Div. I-AA game.

As long as the league quits letting "some teams that shall remain nameless" have easier conf schedules, then I'm in.

Lil bro needs the payday.

It's good exposure for lil bro.

Big bro needs the tune-up, and the extra home game gate.

It's a win-win all around, Doc! ;-)

There should be more cross-divisional games. Nine games would accomplish that or they could swap a divisional game for a cross-divisional every year and stay with eight games schedule. The con for more cross-divisional games would be more likely to have rematches for SECCG.

I would like to see the eight game schedule with 3 cross-divisional games and limit the OOC FCS games to a max of 2 per year and a minimal of 2 OOC FBS games a year.

I just would like to see more cross-divisional and better OOC games.

I can't believe fans would pay to watch 'Bama vs. a lower division team. There are better ways to spend a welfare check.

Then make it the first game of the year instead of a November date.

And it's not a win-win for CFB fans. Only the slaughter fans.

Schedule won't be nearly as important as the bidding wars for top talent. That $50K bag is going up over $100K.

LOL! Sarcasm meter check, people -- I know it's early. Heck, doesn't the smiley-winky-thingy mean anything anymore?

Q. Why is it so hard to solve a crime in Alabama?

A. Because they all have the same DNA and there are no dental records.

<drum roll>

My bad. But, you did have a couple of valid points. I'll give schools a "one game, help the little in state brother" pass every year. But a bunch of 'em aren't even helping one of their in state little brethren.

QUOTE(#14):

That would play havoc with how to manipulate polls so more of your conference teams move up. You play conf games early, lose one, move down, play cupcake late for gimme win, move up while suckers in the other conferences are now beating each other up and losing to one another after having already played their cupcakes gimmes in september. This secures the illusion your conference is great because so many schools are ranked so high.

Yep. The only way to do this without screwing your conference teams in the national standings would be if it was implemented across all of D1.

1. I won't give ANY passes when it comes to scheduling Div. I-AA FCS.

2. They can rationalize all they want about how noble and humanitarian it is to "help a little brother" but it's a crock. They're helping their own selfish interests. It's called poll manipulation.

I know, that's what should have made everybody's sarcasm meters go off the chart, send internal springs busting out, and explode in a nuclear mushroom cloud.

But I guess not...
