Should NHL come down hard on Eric Gryba?

07:51 PM ET 05.03 | Montreal Canadiens forward Lars Eller remains hospitalized this afternoon after being on the receiving end of a bone crushing and likely illegal hit by Ottawa Senators defenseman Eric Gryba. The hit occurred in open ice at around the six-and-a-half minute mark of the second period on Thursday night. Eller got a blind pass from a teammate and was immediately leveled by Gryba and had to be carried off the ice on a stretcher. Raffi Torres was suspended 25 games last year by the NHL after an open ice body slam of Marian Hossa, but in that incident Torres was malicious in his intent and the fact that he left the ice and leapt into the air to deliver the blow to Hossa was a major reason for the massive suspension. That doesn't appear to be the case here, as Gryba's skates never left the ice, but it also didn't look like it was a total accident, and even the Habs defenseman admits he had time to knowingly lower his shoulder. The NHL is ruling on Friday on what to do with Gryba, but having him sit as long as Eller is out seems to be the proper response to this, as the last thing the NHL needs is for another straight Stanley Cup Playoff to get out of control.

"even the Habs defenseman admits..." that he doesn't play for the Habs. This is why using Fansided as your content mill is pathetic.

Clean hit. Bad result. Should't have even been a penalty but, then again, the Habs always get the extra call.

No, no it doesn't.

What a load of crap. Is Fansided based out of Montreal, or did this really come from the Habs' website? The hit was clean, Shanny is an idiot (no news there), and what the hell does "...the last thing NHL needs is for another straight Stanley Cup Playoff..." mean? Would the writer prefer an alternative- lifestyle playoff? This writer needs to find another career path, because he really sucks at this one.

Kinda late on this story, eh?Comparing this clean body check to the cheap shot Torres delivered to Hossa just shows how stupid this writer/copy **** for fansided is.

I agree. T&R lowers its standards (if that's possible) whenever they quote Fansided and/or Golden Gate.

I agree, especially in view of the one game suspension Ference got for a deliberate elbow to Grabowski's head and Rick Nash getting nothing for his jumping elbow to the head of Tomas Kopecky on 3/21. Shanahan is a total moron. He has ZERO credibility to dispense justice. I doubt he's got the necessary IQ to sell hot dogs.

I agree. If they're looking for similarities (which Shanahan is incapable of doing because he's just plumb stupid), Rick Nash's hit on Kopecky looks a lot closer to the Torres hit than anything I've seen. Go figure.

Horrible pass, bad, result. Hockey's a violent game and sometimes hits go wrong. You can see immediately after the hit that gryba tries to skate over to him because he was disapointed that his hit had those consequences. I havent had the chance to,get a really good replay (been too busy Nd havent caughr a minite of either game, just watched a video of it now for first time and view wasnt great)...but based on what I saw, no games, one game, two games is,all fine. Im not offended by what I saw.

THIS ^^^

Damn idiot ... I was a fan when he played the game ....even as a Ranger...but he needs to step down and let someone in there who can actually do the job.

The hit was clean. The puck was on Eller's stick and his head was down. Gryba lowered his shoulder because that's what you do when you're about to collide with somebody. High risk pass from his team mate. I'm a Habs fan and it's unfortunate for Eller but that's hockey. No news here any more however I'm sure Bettman's office will find a way to blow it out of proportion and foul it up totally.

When Shanny was explaining the suspension he kind of admitted that there wasn't anything wrong with the hit except that it was to the head and that it was violent.

I really liked Shannahan when he first started in the front office. He was a lot more consistent than what they had in their before. Now, its just as bad as it ever was.

Colin Campbell is almost starting to look good compared to this idiot. Almost...

Saw another angle last night, from behind the net.

Definite contact to the jaw, Eller's head spun violently before he fell.

Most defintiely should have been a penalty.

I was in doubt before but not after that angle.
