08:39 AM ET 05.05 | Keith Law, baseball's most visible draft expect, says the Cubs will jump on Stanford senior Mark Appel with the second overall pick in baseball's June draft if the Astros don't take him first. He made that comment during a telecast of Stanford's 5-3 victory over Arizona State on Friday night. Appel showed all three of his plus pitches -- mid-90s fastball, slider and changeup -- in striking out 13 in 72/3 innings. The Pirates selected him with the eighth pick last year but he returned to school after being offered $3.8 million. Law believes he made the right decision.

Well, the Cubbies certainly don't need another clutch hitter. [/sarcasm]

Boras is still his agent. Wonder if Boras will ask the Astros or Cubs (if they take Appel) to use their entire draft bonus on Appel like he did to the Pirates last year???
