PJ Carlesimo likely fall guy for Nets crash

09:49 AM ET 05.05 | The locker room door swung open and Brook Lopez was there right away to say it had been his fault on defense, that it was his job to contest the shots in the first half when nobody bothered. Aching Joe Johnson came out soon enough and said the 2-for-14 meltdown was on him, that it was tough "not coming through for the guys, like I usually do." Blame whomever you want for this Game 7 fiasco, but we all know who takes the fall soon enough. The Nets' payroll is capped. The main guys on the roster this season will be the main guys next season. That leaves Mikhail Prokhorov and Billy King with just one high-profile position to fill, and it is the job held for now by P.J. Carlesimo. The Nets are in clear need of an energy transfusion. Carlesimo knows the drill, knows the usual tabloid suspects -- though both Phil Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy are highly unlikely candidates, for different reasons. Carlesimo emotionally thanked the reporters who covered the team, sounding very much like a good soldier about to return to assistant coach duty somewhere after this 99-93 loss to Chicago.

You Are The Wrong PJ, Bro.

Of course PJ will be. Can't blame the players.

wow- talk about a gutless performance by the nyets....yikes(and not just that game- the whole series)Congrats bulls- go get them heat !

Are Knicks fans, after beating Celts (whew!) going to be trolling Nets fans now ... oh wait there aren't any Nets fans. Never mind.

This is not the fault of PJ. In the Bulls 3OT win, Deron went 2-12 over the 4thQ and OTs. This time it was JJ going 2-14 (1-9 from 3pt). You can't have $37mil worth of salary turning in avg numbers, or disappearing altogether.

Nets can rotate in another coach, but the outcome will be the same. The player that would help them the most is someone who can consistently hit an outside shot.

Jerry Sloan is available

May 5, 2013  10:21 AM ET

Well he is the intern coach. So yeas he's going to be the fall guy.

The $$ are always relevant. You plunk down $17mil for Deron (or any player) and you expect leadership and performance when it matters. Deron had Nate Robinson guarding him in the 3OT gaime, and mighty ol' Nate shut him down. And then JJ($19mil) turns in a game 7 performance that is so bad he needs to apologize for it.

With all that dough and experience, why in the world do they need someone to describe how urgent the situation is?

I like Popovich's approach. When the media asks him how he motivates players for the post-season, he says simply these are grown men and they don't need me telling them the game is important. Like I said, you can rotate in a new coach, but unless guys can hit shots, it won't make a differnce.

I don't think Lebron wants to tango with the Bulls for an entire series... i bet he was rooting HARD for New Jersey's old team to pull out the win.

:) I've heard Jerry speak absolutely glowingly about that Deron fella.

No.

He signed the contract with Atlanta.

You can only amnesty a player on your team when the lockout needed.

Final answer.

PJ did his best. The players just didn't show up. They didn't execute the game plan. They were lackadaisical and thinking they could be the Bulls because they were the higher seed and half of the Bulls are in the emergency room...

He's playing despite having plantar fascitist. At least, he played through it.

of course you like pops approach- you are a spur fanand pj was a spur asisstantyes- the $ is important in the grand scheme of things- but not at this point- what I mean is that you can have a guy making 400k step up- or a 20 mil guy. Yes- you expect guys making the $ to be ones to carry you - cause they are typically the stars, and them having all that $ tied up in these guys is a problem in the long run-

Even if I wasn't a Spurs fan, I would still think the same.

Not getting on your case, as I do agree to a certain extent there may have been more PJ could have done. But this playoff flop has more to do with the players, imo.

Yeah, injuries to players certainly did not help things. Hopefully, the Nets owner will factor that in when deciding if a new coach is needed.
