11:16 AM ET 05.05 | Tick, tock, tick, tock ... it's going to be a long Sunday for Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader. He has a telephone hearing with the NHL at 4 p.m. to discuss and dissect his drilling of Ducks defenseman Toni Lydman late in the second period of Saturday's 4-0 loss, which dropped the Wings into a 2-1 series hole. Abdelkader came with a lot of speed and hit Lydman shoulder-to-shoulder; Abdelkader left his feet on impact, which isn't unusual at such a high pace, but the NHL doesn't like it when players do that. It looked like a clean hit so much so that neither referee made a call at first, not until getting input from the linesmen. Abdelkader ended up with five minutes for charging and a game misconduct, triggering a review by NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan, who some might remember used to play for the Wings.

Good point. This is going from being overly cautious to ridiculous real fast! Basically if someone gets hurt, from a perfectly clean and legal hit, there's going to be a suspension? I guess the hit in the Montreal game MAYBE deserved a look and suspension. Maybe not too. I thought it was clean when I first saw it and then thought "maybe" when I saw it in slo-mo a dozen times. I understand the concern over concussions and they need to move toward player safety but guys are going to get hurt now and then. Everything does not result from dirty play.

This will hurt the wings but I don't see anything less 3 games. It was the classic hit that the NHL identified as suspendable. Full speed ahead, take off in flight and strike the head with your shoulder.

I was going to show all the Wings goals. ;-)

Agree with this. And if Justin goes out I'd say this series is in bad shape for the Wings.

Spot on Slappy, you had to watch it from a reverse angle in slo-mo. Hockey is definitely not a slo-mo sport. He had a nano-second to react. There was no malicious intent like so many others we've seen. Definitely not a hit to rally around and seek revenge. Waste of time.

Leaving his feet was the problem that will be key

LOL. I'm glad we didn't draw them in the first round. The Sens surprised me by staying in it all the way even though their injuries were pretty bad all year. Karlsson expecially has converted me into a believer. Don't get me wrong.............the Rangers, except for their inability to score, are playing as good as the Caps in goal and on defense. The Habs on the other hand played lights out all year until maybe the last two weeks. They've clawed their way back it seems. I know Price is far, far better than he played to end the year. And Hank has convinced me that PK really is related to Chelios. My own belief is that a healthy Markov is also a big reason for Hab's resurgence.

How's that for a wishy-washy analysis? Better than a Milbury rant, eh?

This crap has become a joke...he left his feet AFTER he hit him....but you know they're gonna suspend him.
Ref standing right on top of the play doesn't EVEN call a penalty..he saw it best...and you got one of the idiots that takes five minutes to drop a puck in a faceoff making the call?
You got Perry running all over the ice slashing and crosschecking everyone in sight and he gets away with everything?
I still think the Habs game hit was legal.... and the blood and fans made that call as well.
Get out the ballerina slippers boys...we're turning this game in to one for poooooooooosays.
Thing that I thought was funny was Selanne coming over like he was going to do something about it. What was he going to do?
Good thing all the old time hockey players are retired...they'd spend most of their season suspended these days....they've gotta be embarrassed by what this joke of a league has become

May 5, 2013  12:39 PM ET

They got the call right on the ice, and it should be 2-3 game suspension.

LOL Chelios was never that fast.

May 5, 2013  01:22 PM ET

Is it still a headshot if the guy doesn't appear to get hurt? I say it is, if he hits the head, and it isn't if he doesn't - simple? This one looked like Ab tried to hit him high - jumping, hence charging (2 or 5?? game???) - intent to injure - that's a horse of a different colour, but, that's the call when it's a game misconduct - and then the auto-review. I say, over-kill this time - which smacks of knee-jerk, clean-em-upism.

And .... here we go again. If that moronic sheriff gave Gryba two games for a good, clean hockey hit, what will Abdelkader get for leaving his feet?

Maybe so. But the Series is tied 1-1, which puts the Habs at the same level.... at least for now.

Yep...

And that's why he's gonna grab some pine for a game or two.

I liked what Kesler said about the Gryba hit 'Was it clean according to the rules? yes. Did it show a lack of respect for the player he hit? yes
