John Idzik no stranger to QB competition

06:11 PM ET 05.05 | The New York Jets are going to have a crowded quarterbacks room during mini and training camps this offseason, with five signal-callers getting a chance to be the starter, according to general manager John Idzik. A five-way quarterback competition is unheard of, but something that Idzik might be tinkering with because of his Seattle Seahawks days. Last year while Idzik was with Seattle, the team had four quarterbacks in camp who received reps, but only two took the bulk of preseason snaps in Russell Wilson and Matt Flynn. In New York, they need to juggle time for Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith, David Garrard, Greg McElroy and Matt Simms. It would appear likely Sanchez and Smith will get most of the opportunities, with one of the other three having to absolutely shine for any chance.

Idzik had more to work with in Seattle, as most draft "experts" admit they'd have Wilson as a first rounder if he was taller. Heck, even the great optimist Carroll slammed Sanchez when he came out. Although I toast anyone who says "the Jets Suck", I wouldn't wish that GM job on my worst enemy.

I can't imagine having a serious thought about starting McElroy or Simms. Garrard last started a game in 2010 and is 35. Certainly no future there, although he could be the best of the bunch here in 2013. I would be shocked if Smith is ready to play in 2013, although I think he may become a decent QB. Sanchez is a total waste. If you go with him as your 2013 starter, you are throwing away your season. Even though they have 5 QBs, they could really use a veteran QB who could come in and play for a couple of seasons while Smith gets ready. I am not sold on Garrard being that guy and I wouldn't even think of using Sanchez.

The Jets don't have a QB competition. They have Geno, the should-be starter, and a bunch of scrubs.

Although to McElroy's credit he played somewhat well when given the chance. And really he didn't play so well, it was just in comparison to the other Jets' QBs that McElroy looked semi-competent.

Put it this way... the Jets have no future with any of their QBS except for MAYBE Geno, meaning Geno is the only QB who should even get a chance to start.

A veteran QB like whom?

I don't see any free agent QBs out there who might be able to come in and save the day for the Jets.

FYI Mr Idzik, you need Quarterbacks to have a quarterback competition

I'm thinking Pete Carroll had more to say about the QB tinkering in Seattle than did Idzik.

John Schneider is the GM in Seattle and it was his decision to draft Wilson.
