Blount's contract slashed in New England

07:00 AM ET 05.06 | With the stroke of a pen, LeGarrette Blount has become an even less risky acquisition in New England. When Bill Belichick mentioned that he felt the Patriots got good value in a trade for running back [Blount], he probably wasn't just talking about what the team gave up to acquire him (seventh-round pick and Jeff Demps). The value extends to Blount's contract, which was renegotiated to consummate the trade. Blount was scheduled to earn $1.2 million in base salary with the Buccaneers in 2013, with additional bonus money, but the deal was slashed to $630,000 with the Patriots (and is reduced to $358,000, via a split, if he lands on injured reserve). Blount can also earn a $50,000 workout bonus in New England.

Must be Groundhog day.

Not much risk at all. Demps never showed enough to get on the field, anyway. And as for late-round picks, what good are they, anyhow? Who ever heard of a sixth or seventh rounder making an impact?

Yeah those sixth rounders just don't turn out to be very good. Uh, wasn't Tom Brady a sixth rounder?

You just lobbed that softball out there didn't you?

It happens, but so does Halley's Comet. Still waiting for some team to trade all their first five rounds of picks so they can grab 12 guys in round six.

I would cry my arse off if I was ever drafted/traded to the Patriots. That is one team that does NOT pay it's players.....not including Brady, of course.

This is a big story? Sheesh ..

May 6, 2013  09:03 AM ET

He basically has to work/run harder now, for less.... He should fire his agent.

May 6, 2013  09:09 AM ET

I don't think he's going to see much more playing time with the Pats than he did last season with the Bucs.

Blount shold be pissed. I bet Schiano (The Hoodies buddy) ochestrated this crap. He wanted to get Blount out of there and take his money.

Blount and/or his agent had to agree to the terms of the new contract. I'm guessing they told him that if he didn't agree, though, that he'd be cut and he knew that he might not get picked up by anyone.

That may still happen.

All too prophetic, I fear...

Many first round picks are less than stellar.

Neither do the Bears.
