Why Nets may not get their wish

07:03 AM ET 05.06 | P.J. Carlesimo took over after 28 games this season, then drove the Nets to a playoff appearance before GM Billy King announced the interim coach would not return -- and, yes, King will reach out to Phil Jackson. While players -- including Deron Williams and Kris Humphries -- were adamant that the Nets will need an experienced head coach who commands respect, King said he isn't putting such restraints on his search. ... "I don't think (head coaching experience is important) because Tom Thibodeau didn't have any," King said. "Erik Spoelstra didn't. Mark Jackson didn't have any and he's done a heck of a job. Some guys are just natural. So I think you just have to talk to guys."

So who's the next young great coach out there? They're taking a chance and it will be a needle in a haystack. Shaka Smarts?

so the players are demanding an experienced coach? Speaks volumes about them. Sounds like they need a motivational coach to get them going. I thought they are pros!

The only ones with those two qualifications are currently employed. Except Phil - and he ain't coming.

Phil, can't make these players want to win. You either have it inside or you don't. Nets are stuck at being a 2nd round at best team for the next few years. They are being paid as title contenders but they are not there and they mortgaged their future with Wallace, Williams and Johnson, Lopez. They can't really make any moves.

Nothing wrong with Brook Lopez. It's the other three withh issues. Joe Johnson is overrated, Williams has more terrible games than good ones, and Wallace is awful.

The Nets players should be ashamed of themselves. Not to take away from the Bulls but really Nets thats the best effort you can give.

I didn't say anything is wrong with Lopez. I am saying their team is stuck together tied to the hip based off the decisions Billy King made. They can't really make a move to get better. Wallace was brought in to keep Williams. Johnson was brought in to take them to another level and give them another scoring option. They paid NYC prices for salary cap but will be lucky to make it out of the second round.

Patrick Ewing???

they are certainly stuck.I think it could be done, a flip, but they'd literally have to take back pennies on the dollarand with a new arena/new city- not sure if they can afford to suck and rebuild.

Yeah they know the players are going no where so let's bring in a coach to get players in their "prime" over the top. I just don't see it in the players. If you can't get "stars" up for a game 7 in your arena then what is there left to say. I say the problem is more the players than the coach. PJ wasn't awful coaching he wasn't the best but to announce that he isn't coming back that fast.

Nets also need a better #3 option cause Joe Johnson once again folds in the playoffs, they need a legit 3 point specialist and they need a better bench.
Blatche is the only consistent guy off the bench...
Wait a minute they have Teletovic???
He should have got minutes, but hey the coach has a man crush on Joe boy who couldn't hit the backside of a barn!
I know plenty guys who would have done better than 2/9 from the field with facitis!

Will It Matter, Bros?

Tom Thibodeau is a great coach. Spoelstra is the next Phil Jackson - coaching a team so talented he can't screw it up (but he did the first season). Jackson is never going to coach any of these desperate teams - and risk being exposed for the over rated phony he is. Why do you think he left the Lakers when he did? The Nets are a collection of "stars" who can't play team basketball.

PJ will be the fall guy for the abysmal performance put on by the Nets this post season. There is no excuse for their collapse at the end of game 4, or for the lack of effort at home in game 7. It may not be PJ's fault, but he'll be held accountable.

May 6, 2013  12:12 PM ET

Yeah I guess so. They shouldn't need a movitivational speaker to get them over the hump for a game 7 though. I actually think their ceiling is 2nd round no matter who coaches them, unless Lopez becomes a little more aggressive demanding the ball. One of the players must be the leader and expect more. I don't see it in this team.
