Raiders scouts "shocked" at the drafting of D.J. Hayden

10:37 PM ET 05.08 | Reggie McKenzie and the Oakland Raiders certainly took a risk in selecting cornerback D.J. Hayden with the 12th overall selection in the NFL Draft, and NFL scouts seem to concur. According to WalterFootball, scouts were shocked McKenzie would draft a risky player like Hayden with his initial first-round pick as a general manager. The scouts are most probably concerned about his injury. Hayden collided with a teammate at practice last year at Houston and severed his inferior vena cava, nearly killing him. However, he miraculously survived, participated in Pro Day, and was scooped up by the Raiders, who traded down from the No. 3 pick and selected him. Scouts also believed that the Raiders would have been "safer" going with defensive tackle Shariff Floyd out of Florida. Floyd fell to the Vikings with the 23rd selection. Preliminary mock drafts had the Raiders picking Floyd at No. 3 overall, but on the day of the draft, several reports came out claiming that they were seriously considering Hayden.

Dumb. Other scouts may be shocked, but the Raiders scouts aren't... After all, they were the ones that scouted the player...

I hate FN anymore.

Selecting DJ in the first round took balls. But I'd like to think the Raiders picked a player with a lot of heart and perseverance, something the Oakland defense sorely needs.

You have to wonder when a team selects a player considered either the #1 DB (Mike Mayock) or #15 best player period - Todd McShay that if any team but the Raiders would have picked him up would we be hearing all of this. Green Bays does this the same thing its genius and don't ge me start if New England did this. This was not a height, weight, speed pick but a need pick. When you have two DB's on one year contracts you can now let the competition begin on who gets resigned and who will partner with Hayden to form a nice DB tandem. The Raiders second pick was also projected as a late 1st round or early 2nd round pick and no one can dispute the pickup of Moore unless they want to make something up. These gurus need to get over the fact that the Raiders are running a real program and the guy in charge has evaluated some of the best players to join the NFL. When they go 6 and 10 next year and then 10 and 6 the following year I bet the noise will be wow what a great draft from 2013. But anyway I just watch the games I am not an expert.
