This year's Russell Wilson

06:55 AM ET 05.09 | While post-draft criticism of Geno Smith whirs, one might wonder whether it's time to wait until he throws a pass in the NFL. No one is dubbing Smith as "the next Andrew Luck" or "the next Robert Griffin III," nor should they. But in a 2013 QB class in which no one came close to standing out like that polished pair a year ago, the question should be: "Who's the next Russell Wilson?" Let us then reintroduce you to Matt Barkley. Before returning for his senior season at USC, he was getting buzz as a potential successor to old Pac-12 rival Luck as the No. 1 prospect in 2013 ... [Barkley] will be helped by three things: location, location, location. Chip Kelly and the Eagles have the scheme to magnify his strengths.

I doubt there's a Luck, Griffin, or Wilson in this year's draft.

May 9, 2013  07:55 AM ET

Wonder if Kelly's scheme will magnify Barkley's arm?

May 9, 2013  08:31 AM ET

Face it. There isn't a Russell Wilson in every year's draft.

But there always seems to be a Gina.

This Chip Kelly guy seems to have all of the answers and hasn't coached a pro game yet.

Rubbish

Kelly's "scheme" revolves around a running QB. Barkley is not that at all. Now Vick on the other hand might have one hell of a year since the ball will be gone in under 3 seconds and it won't matter that his line is so awful.

I'm not sure Vick is the guy for an offense that asks the quarterback to do quick reads and get rid of the ball. Taking off and running with the ball is always in Vick's mind. He's probably looking for running lanes when he should be watching for who will be open half a second from now.

The difference between Barkley and Wilson is; Wilson started his rookie season, Barkley won't step on the field until Vick suffers his usual game/ or season ending injury.

If Barkley does win out the job does that mean Michael Vick will be the next Matt Flynn?

This year's Russell Wilson is in the eight grade and has a big test in General Health this afternoon. Leave him alone....Jeesh!

Matt Barkley bro ?

Kelly has proclaimed his offense will revolve around what he has, and not a "scheme". Good first step in my opinion as a head coach.

Damn good comment and spoken like a man that knows something about Vick and the NFL!!!! :-)

I agree and Kelly will run the "hurry up" offense regardless of who is at QB!!! Doesn't Brady and the Pats run the "hurry up" offense"???

Barkley won't start over Vick.

May 9, 2013  10:47 AM ET

If you take into consideration last season's entire body of work, I believe Wilson was actually the best of the three.

Wilson should have been the ROY.

Wilson will be around long enough to get his revenge on that. As much as I like RG-III, I'm afraid he'll be an historical artifact in a very few years.

But for bad defense, Wilson would have faced Kapernicus for the NFC title.Wilson should have been the ROY.

Kapernicus? Wasn't it Spartacus? No wait, Copernicus was an astrnomer... um...
