Belichick explains Super walk off

Bill Belichick has come under considerable fire for marching out onto the field, and shaking Tom Coughlin's hand while there still was one second left on the clock. He already was long gone and headed to the locker room when Giants quarterback Eli Manning took the final snap and kneeled down to end the game. "Basically, on the last play I wasn't really sure of the time," Belichick said. "Everybody started onto the field and then I got over there and I wanted to congratulate Tom. I've been in that situation before after the game. I wanted to get over there and congratulate him and congratulate him on the championship. They deserved it. There really wasn't much left at that point."

If I were Bellichick, I'd have explained by saying, "I was in a hurry to go mind my own business. But since you're being nosy, I had to go take your mamma's drawers back to her."

Seriously, while it is fun to villify Bellichick, or Bellicheat, or whatever he is called nowadays, there are a million better things to carry on about.

I love football fans. We'll see 100 articles related to the "ONE SECOND LEFT" nonsense, and about 4 dedicated to Bellichick opting to not kick a field goal when he had a chance.

Too easy a target, I'll pass!

February 6, 2008  07:45 AM ET

I dont like the guy but seriously this is getting blown out of proportion.

This story is completely insane. So he follows the masses on to the field congratulates Coughlin, only to learn there is 1 second left. What is he supposed to do.....come out a 2nd time. You can dislike Belichick all you want, but to use this as fodder for building a case for his having no class is completely absurd.

I'm just ticked off about the spying thing. No wonder they won so much.

Get a life, and let this man alone! I would have done the very same thing he did! What would have been the reason to come back out...it was over people!!!

Another Patriot story being taken way out of content.. Imagine that, can't wait till next year when all you haters pick on another team instead of just cheering your team on!! A lot of you people need to get a life!!!

February 6, 2008  08:17 AM ET

Don't forget to crucify the Pats' waterboy too...he also left the field with 1 second remaining

February 6, 2008  08:20 AM ET

Really? Please ignore this thread. Don't dignify this one. It's a cheap shot. The man did what his team didn't. He shook Coughlin's hand. End of story. Blame the refs for confusing everyone.

February 6, 2008  08:24 AM ET

It had to be a big disappointment for Bill & the rest of the Patriots team. The Patriots will reload & be in the hunt for a championship next year.

February 6, 2008  08:29 AM ET

Not a Belichick fan, but seriously who gives a rats @$$

February 6, 2008  08:29 AM ET

I'll be on the pot thread for todays 2000 comment conversation today....I figure the comments left by people just dropping in will be more amusing over there

February 6, 2008  08:30 AM ET

KP and the rest of us that are sick and tired of ridiculous dribble.

February 6, 2008  08:30 AM ET

He made sure that he could get to Coughlin before the hordes of people wouldn't allow him to. I think most of the Patriot players had left too. They should have just called the game with one second left. People are giving Bellichick a free pass on the taping of th Rams and them they crucify him about this? Where is your perspective people!?

February 6, 2008  08:34 AM ET

How dare Coughlin and the Giants walk on to the field with time left to play. Oh right thats not an issue.........how come?

February 6, 2008  08:38 AM ET

Dam, people acting like they want to kill Bill for walking off the field with what one second on the clock, this is starting to get really stupid. I should give Bill a life time supply of Hater-Be Gone he really needs it.

Whatz up Everyone
