Phaneuf's final game wearing the leaf?

07:29 AM ET 05.10 | As the odds seem stacked up in front of the Maple Leafs, it may be time to start wondering about the club's future -- which looks bright with Jake Gardiner, Cody Franson and Joffrey Lupul. Franson and Lupul are two of the true leaders of this club. They're the kind of people you want influencing a dressing room. But you also have seen Nazem Kadri struggle. ... You also have to wonder about Dion Phaneuf's future in Toronto. After his overtime gaffe, in which his ill-advised pinch paved the way for David Krejci's game-winner to put the Bruins ahead three games to one in the series, Phaneuf has found himself in hostile ground with Maple Leafs fans.

Hopefully the NHL. Who would want this guy?

-Phaneuf is still under contract for next season and is owed $6.5M.
-The cap is dropping by $6M next season.
-There will be an abundance of veteran defensemen on the market this summer.

Conclusion: The Leafs are stuck with Phaneuf for another year.

What, no...say it ain't so!

Oh boy this thread should be a doozy.

If his pinch worked and it set up the game winner..would we be reading this now??.....it's a game people...he took a chance and it back fired..Phaneuf has the ability to make that type of play,it's not like it was Dan Girardi or Luke Schenn trying to do it.... he's not the first nor will he be the last to be caught in this type of situation.....I think Toronto has finally turned the corner...Don't think they need to do too much in the off season....

Maybe the last straw? Miss Pinch is a liability every game. Perhaps you'd like to see him and his 6.5 mil contract in New York?

The issue is a new deal. Hell, I wouldn't even mind still having him around if he makes $3-4 mil and is a second pair guy, but I don't see him taking that role here. Toronto needs the space to re-sign Kessel, Kadri (whose poor play this postseason is really gonna help the negotiations), Franson (whose great play this postseason is really gonna hurt the negotiations lol) and Reimer. With Rielly, Percy and Blackett almost good enough to make the trip up the road to the ACC, Phaneuf isn't the guy they need. They need to find a way to get a real #1 D man. A guy who a youngster like Rielly can actually learn off.

And you would think Phanuef would be the perfect guy to groom young players....but your the Leaf fan and obviously watch more of them than I do ...so I respect your wishes ......hey I was a Leaf fan for a half season...when Leetch was traded to them.....it ripped my heart out.....still have the Zephyr Leaf hat.....lol....:)

No thanks...just unloaded one Wade Redden....who by the way is playing pretty decent for Boston....

-The Leafs could eat some of his salary to move him.-There is certainly not an abundance of "veteran" defencemen on the market. The only guys on that list I would even consider remotely decent are Regehr and Streit.

If I'm a GM, I need to fill out my roster and I have $6M less to work with, I value lower-cost free agents like Roszival, Ference and Scuderi much greater than an overpriced Phaneuf.

If Toronto looking to unload Phaneuf, the only way it's going to happen is if they take a guy like Paul Stastny in return.

IF he played a solid game, your point would be valid. But he did not. How many times a game do you hear announcers talk about "keeping your feet moving". Then watch Dion. He is the definition of a pylon out there. Way too often he is standing still.

DL will articulate this better, but, Dion is currently the Captain and viewed as the leader of the defence. In truth, he is neither. Would he accept a lesser role going forward? Of course not. Therefore, he has to be moved. I expect that if they cannot move him (EDM cough cough) they buy him out.

And Kadri. Might be wrong, but what I have seen from him is a guy, still with lots of potential, but a long long way from a finished product. He has done almost nothing these playoffs, but he is still young (esp mentally). No reason to bail on him yet, he has done a lot of growing the last couple of years, and there is no reason to think he cannot continue.

And a bit TY to the interns for identifying this as the most important thread today. Saves us having to hijack another "who will be running the Avs" thread

MMMMMWWWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Wasn't this supposed to be a great trade for BB? Toronto seems to be able to take good players and make them underachievers. On the Flames side of the trade, the only one still there is Stajan.

Had a similar player in Dubinsky ...heralded pick...tons of talent...but never turned the corner...who knows though he may eventually thrive in Columbus....
