Best time for Phillies to trade Ryan Howard?

09:15 AM ET 05.11 | Trading Ryan Howard will not be an easy task, but it should be No. 1 on the Phillies list of priorities if they hope to have a fighting chance at contending in 2014 and beyond. That's not to say that they are a better team without him, or that they should unceremoniously jettison a player who was one of the driving forces behind Philadelphia's baseball renaissance. It's just reality. Still, this isn't about money. This is about the talent the Phillies need at the premium positions that they are going to need to fill, and if trading Howard and eating a significant chunk of dollars can land them a potential second baseman or third baseman or shortstop of the future, they would be wise to move heaven and earth to make it happen.

For what? A bag of balls? Who would want this guy.

What for?the Phillies should take responsibility with the player's contract, why trade him? Why because he is no longer good in Phillies lineup? Just keep the player until the contract expires, :-) :-)

Back in 2012 season the dodgers try to get the tough pitcher, Cliff Lee from wavers and,, the Phillies refuse the dodgers offer, good players could had landed in that trade,, should the Phillies cry out their mistakes and doubts about it??

That was two or three years ago. Now, who would take him?

Ya beat me to it. Add that his $125 million ( $95 million still owed to him ) contract still has three more years on it ( FA 2016 ), and he is going nowhere. NO WHERE....

Howard is in the Arod zone. One is still owed $95 million and the other $113 million.

There's always the Dodgers. I mean who would have ever thought Boston could unload Crawford's contract?

The Implosion has begun...

Tell that to the Fans & Media in Philly...

I can hear it already "Utley & Howard coming off injuries, they lost Doc & Lannan... they were decimated by injuries"

I never say never since the horrible Wells contract was moved - twice!

May 11, 2013  04:33 PM ET

Best time to trade Ryan Howard? That would be sometime in 2010.

May 11, 2013  11:36 PM ET

I bet the Angels would welcome him with an open paycheck.

doo doo grits

Phillies are desparate to get younger. So they aquire Michael Young who is the oldest of the infielders. Go Figure. He having a decent year this year. but for how long. Philly waited too long to try to trade Utley or Rollins. Howard has a big contract that would be hard to moe. If someone interested in Howard would expect Philly to front most of Howards contract.
