Matt Barkley could "get the nod" as Eagles starter

05:35 PM ET 05.12 | When the first two days of the NFL Draft concluded with USC quarterback Matt Barkley still on the board, a lot was made about how he must not have what it takes to be a top-notch NFL quarterback. While the jury is still out on the former Trojans captain when it comes to how he'll be remembered as an NFL quarterback, the Philadelphia Inquirer believes Barkley could "get the nod" as the Eagles starter in 2013. Now, it's a bit brash to suggest Barkley will start on the first day of the season, but Inquirer writer Jeff McLane might be on to something when he compares Barkley's situation with that of Tom Brady's. Brady wasn't the starter in his first season, in fact he started the season as the fourth-string quarterback. But by season's end he was Drew Bledsoe's backup and after Bledsoe suffered an injury against the New York Jets the next season, we all know what happened next. Barkley may not start the season under center but it's likely that he can work his way up the depth chart and put himself in a position to start later on in the 2013 season if Micheal Vick falls back into his struggling ways.

I see a similar scenario. In mine Barkley takes the reins when Kelly thinks he's ready. He will take Eagles into first playoff game; this season. He is being groomed for greatness by Kelly now, but since his freshman year in high school and 2 years with Pete Carroll.

I dunno, Ben, I think that'd be a longshot, but I love a good sports story, so I wouldn't mind seeing it happen. As long as he didn't clobber the Seahawks. But it just seems incredibly unlikely for this year.

I don't get the Brady comparison at all.

"Says the Philadelphia Inquirer" ? They also fired Andy Reid for the last 5 seasons.

I see a man drinking too much home brew.

Got to love the juxaposition of stories here. The one preceding this is about how Michael Vick will have his best season.

I see Chip Kelly slapping his forehead with his palm, saying "I could have been loved in college," while be pelted by batteries, bottles and rotten fruit.

True - sometimes, one realizes that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. (e.g. Nick Saban).

And that's just after a close win against a crappy team. Shields up if (when) they (frequently) lose.

Naw, Matt Barkley's job will be holding the giant Cue Cards that send in the plays.

Barkley very well could be the starter ,its not like there's alot of competition at QB in Philly, Vick is mediocre at best.

May 13, 2013  11:36 AM ET

Barkley isn't physically thick enough or fast enough to last as a starter in the NFL. I like the guy, but I think he's going to get hit often and hard.

I can think of some great QB's from the present and past that where not very fast or big but they got the job done at a high level of play.

May 13, 2013  12:04 PM ET

Vick will win that job...but if Barkley does, the Eagles are going to have a long season.

May 13, 2013  12:07 PM ET

I still see Foles as being the starter. Kelly has said many times that his QB can't be a turnover machine...which is a dead on description of Vick. Barkley may eventually be the starter, but I think Foles is the best choice for this upcoming season.

Going to be a fun Camp in Philadelphia!!!!

I'd cheer for any QB who supplanted the innocent animal killer Vick.
