07:00 AM ET 05.13 | So far, the players are saying all the right things, but there may be more to the quarterback competition for Gang Green. The Jets' decision-makers are in love. You can tell from talking to people around the team during this weekend's rookie mini-camp that many in the organization are smitten with new quarterback Geno Smith. It's beginning to look more and more like the starting job is his to lose. Smith was impressive during the two days of the mini-camp open to the media. ... The 22-year-old was even more impressive off the field. He held players' only meetings at the team hotel to learn the plays and handled the media like a longtime pro.

What happened to winning the job? Why don't we wait to see how he does when the vets get to camp and they put pads on. Maybe then we'll have some idea. What about proving yourself in the preseason like Russell Wilson?
Oh wait, this is the Jets. We'll see what Buttfumble has to say about it.

Can't you just see them setting this up for the punchline? Mark and Gina, Gina and Mark. They've found the perfect replacement for Tim Tebow at Rex's Big Top.

Handling the media like a longtime pro? We'll see about that when the games begin.

The Post... Not sure how to take what they say....

Always good to see Jets and Lose in the same headline. It just so happens that Geno Smith is in the middle this time.

For all the ridicule the Jets have taken over the past two years, this might be the first step in their rebuilding process. It is not going to be easy, but it has to start somewhere, and QB is as good a place as any..

I didnt think Geno would be very good in the first place, but going to the Jets and starting immediately definitely doesnt help his case. Hope he saves his money, he wont be around long.

With a big grain of salt, usually.

Coaches aren't stupid. They know a so so season with Sanchez and they are gone. A so so season with Smith, a rookie QB) and they buy time and maybe get lucky. This really is not rocket science. It is not just about Rex, HCs travel with a cadre of assistant coaches attached to them with an umbilical cord.

I guarantee we're going to win the Super Bowl!

May 13, 2013  08:56 AM ET

The Jets players and coaches are so desperate to have some sort of on field leader that they'll latch on to anyone who can call a play and buckle his chinstrap at the same time.

Geno seems to fill that role for now..........

I don't think a rookie mini-camp is where you decide a starting QB, but maybe the Jets are so desperate to resolve this issue they will. I don't blame them because they really have no other choice. Sanchez has shone he ain't up to the gig and the only thing keeping him around is his big contract... at least for now. With the recent success of rookie QB's in the NFL, the Jets can't be blamed for getting excited about their guy. We'll begin to see in pre-season games if Smith is the real deal. Until then, the Jets will be all-in with ole Geno.

Meanwhile, Mark Sanchez's speech therapist reports that he is still saying "Futtbumble."

I think "winning the job" doesn't apply to the Jets QB situation at this point. Although, if Geno plays and has less than 20ints and one butt fumble, it has to be labeled a roaring success!

Then they need to make Ryanous Rex extinct really soon, that might turn the team around.

You'll notice that when Sanchez was the hot commodity in NY Rex was right behind him 100% patting Mark and himself on the back constantly. When Sanchez started going South Ryan dropped him like a Hot Tamale and he'll throw Smith under the bus faster than a Klansman throwing Rosa Parks to the rear of the bus.

You make a good point there. But I think Sanchez will be the starter to open the season to take pressure off Smith. I put the O/U at 4 games when they replace Sanchez with Smith.

May 13, 2013  09:49 AM ET

As a long time Jets fan,I hope David Garrard can play and starts. Geno is the future. I wouldn't want him rushed into the starting line-up. The Jets should play solid D and Garrard does not turn the ball over. As far as Sanchez goes, maybe he can be salvaged, but probably not in New York.

That makes sense. 4 games is a short leash, what happens if you are 2-2?

Bucs, Pats, Bills, Titans. They could be 3-1 and still suck.
