07:08 AM ET 05.13 | As the heat on Don Mattingly rises, MLB life isn't all that much better at the top of the Angels. [Baseball] sources say Angels owner Arte Moreno is raging behind the scenes over his team's poor play and can't decide who to blame most, manager Mike Scioscia or GM Jerry DiPoto, for the fact that Josh Hamilton is batting .207 with 43 strikeouts, closer Ernesto Frieri has already been brought into games four times in the eighth inning, or that the Halos are eighth in the American League in runs, 11th in on-base pct., 14th in ERA, stolen bases and team defense, and 11-22 in one-run games. It got about as bad as Scioscia could hope it would this past week when the Angels lost two out of three to the woebegone Houston Astros.

Meanwhile, the Rangers and A's begin their battle for AL West supremacy this evening.

Bye bye, Angels.

Arte, this is what you get for paying aging ballplayers for PAST performance.

The one big difference, in fact enormous difference, between all other owners and Boss George was that George would continue spending in the face of failure while all the other owners had a gigantic splurge and then would regess.
Eventually, he would spend his way into seven World Series championships, 11 American League pennants and 16 AL East titles.
The moral of the story is if you really got it; then flaunt it, and, if, you have to ask, then, you probably aren't as rich as you think you are and are just playing with scared money.
Ir remains to be seen where Moreno will eventually wind up: Boss II or just another also ran.

Look on the bright side Arte, Yankee fans are really enjoying Vernon Wells on your dime.

The GM and along with you pull the trigger in all of these free agents signings. Baseball has changed Arte the money is bigger, players are more greedy, and winning is not as important to some of them as more money. You need to look Arte at the last three seasons and look at how the Giants and Cards have built their teams, through the draft and a key free agent signing. I am sure that if your team doesn't make the playoffs your manger will be the scapegoat and be fired for something he didn't do- make dumb free agent signings.

That's the problem with measuring length and girth being your ownership style. Now he's hanging out in a very cold breeze. You don't spend just to spend. He needs to ask Dan Snyder about that.

Look in the mirror and point Arte...it starts with you. Unfortunately it will likely be Scioscia who takes the fall but the responsibility starts at the top.

It's starting to look that way. But we'll see. Scioscia has a whole lotta years left on the stupi contract they gave him. Moreno isn't going to want to eat that. Bottom line is, Scioscia can't swing the bat for Hamilton or any one else in the line up.

You know those guys are too egotistical to take anything upon themselves. If you're one of their people you do what you're told to a large extent, and if it goes wrong you get blamed and fired. It seems like that is a standard at most jobs.

All true, but it's easier to fire a manager than an underperforming team. And no owner fires himself.

No you are right about that Moose. But as strange as it is, when the players do not perform the coaches are the ones who get fired. Not sure about Moreno's reluctance to eat the remaining years on Scioscia's contract? There is likely a buyout clause and Arte doesn't seem to mind "wasting" money

I have no idea what clauses are in Scioscia's contract. I just looked it up and he has five more years after this season. He's making $2MM, so yeah, Artie might gamble eating $10MM. Afterall, If Scioscia signs to manage another team, Artie only has to pay the difference between what the new team is paying him and the $2MM per year he owes him.

And as you point out, you can't fire the team. Last year the Angels fired the hitting instructor for crissakes.
