Blues GM acknowledges 'cloudy' goalie situation

07:18 AM ET 05.13 | As it turned out, three was indeed a crowd in the St. Louis crease, which wound up hosting young Jake Allen, and veterans Brian Elliott and Jaroslav Halak. GM Doug Armstrong admitted to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Jeremy Rutherford that the situation is "cloudy" going into the offseason. Contract situations don't necessarily make decisions any easier. Allen, 22, is a restricted free agent this summer while both Elliott, 28, and Halak, 27, will become unrestricted free agents after the 2013-14 season. The reflex is to say that the Blues should trade Halak, even if he's that much further from his outstanding 2010 playoff run with the Montreal Canadiens.

Unfortunately, this has been the Blues story for much of the past two decades. When they've had high quality teams that did well in the regular season, the goaltending has never been as good as who they are up against in the playoffs.

They've acquired a number of goalies over the years to fill that #1 void, but it's never worked out. Roman Turek, Chris Osgood, Jaroslav Halak. For whatever reason, the playoff losses always seem to come down to the goaltending never being good enough.

You guys had Ben Bishop at one time ready to come up too. Halak had injury issues, and Elliot played really good. The Blues needed someone to score, as Quick had their number!

Yep, I'm not sure I don't wish we had held on to Bishop. Jake Allen looked good this year, but he needs experience before they can tell if he is the real deal.

You're right, putting the puck in the net was a problem all year, especially down the stretch. Elliot got hot and they were winning a ton of 1-0 and 2-1 games, but that isn't a good formula for the playoffs.
