Bengals can't afford to trade Chad

Simply put: The Bengals can't afford to trade Chad Johnson. The Bengals would take an estimated $8 million hit on their salary cap in 2008 if they trade or release Johnson, a move the seven-year veteran wide receiver repeatedly has implied he wants. Trading or terminating Johnson's contract would cost the Bengals some $8.03 million in salary cap space this year, according to figures obtained Tuesday by The Enquirer. In other words, if Johnson is not with the Bengals in 2008, the club would have $8 million in dead money against the salary cap of $116 million because of the acceleration of bonus money already paid to Johnson. The Bengals cannot get that money back from Johnson and must account for it toward the cap.

Well...I guess that ends all the speculation on that....although, I might be willing to take a 8mil cap hit to get rid of this guy

lol agreed with what loki said

i know the situation is bad, but be a man and stick with the team Chad, you still have one of the top QBs in the league with you.

Capanomics can be brutal.

This guy has always been about himself. Now he's talking about sitting out the year, but he would miss the spotlight, unless some network gives him a job during his holdout.

Is there any fan that would want him on there team?

only people that weren't paying attention to what happened with TO on the iggles

well, they could bench him for conduct detrimental to the team, and save money...

the 8 mil cap hit is separate from incentive clauses....if he is on the team he will get his base salary and roster bonuses

How about in addition to WR he also has to retrieve the kicking tee and hand out cups of gatorade to the other players. Teach him some humility and make him earn his salary.

So, we are on the threshold of a Randy Moss as Raider season for CJ. That should be fun for Bungle fan. Alligator arming the ball, pulling up on crossing patterns, dissent. I know who I won't draft come fantasy football season.

Ocho needs to go...

February 6, 2008  11:17 AM ET

it would be worth it to get rid of a cancer -- why is it that the accountants are running football? -- or I am just naive to think it should be about more than money.

February 6, 2008  11:53 AM ET

Well I guess we're all gonna find out if Ocho is good to his word.....will he sit in '08?

February 6, 2008  12:01 PM ET

Of course he isn't going to sit, becasue then he doesn't get paid. When was the last time you saw an athlete threaten to sit out a season and then actually sit it out? Never. Wihtout football he has no salary and no endorsement deals. I don't know too many companies endorsing someone who is unemployed. He gets his endorsements because of football and without football why would anyone endorse him?

"Id take an 8 million dollar hit to get rid of this guy"...

Thanks for explaining your a moron, that was easy...

February 6, 2008  12:41 PM ET

The $8 million dollar hit and the mess the Bungles are in is there own fault. Chad has been his biggest fan since he came into the league. The guy is represented by Rosenhaus for goodness sake. Is Marvin Lewis and the rest of the organization that surprised by what the Gold Grill is pulling? It was going to happen sooner or later. When they didn't make the Super Bowl in Ocho's time frame, he went TO and started chucking the franchise under the bus. Serves Cincinnati right for investing that kind of dough in a selfish player.

Be a man, you signed the damn contract now serve it out you overpaid POS!!

February 6, 2008  01:04 PM ET

An under .500 team last season with a long-shot chance at making the playoffs can afford to take the $8 million hit.
