Samardzija deal won't happen soon

07:12 AM ET 05.14 | With Anthony Rizzo's contract set, many look at Jeff Samardzija as the next very expensive domino to fall for the Cubs. Samardzija's agent Mark Rogers told there is nothing to report on a potential Samardzija deal at this point. It appears after the 2013 season both sides will re-evaluate their positions and see if a long-term deal makes sense for everyone involved. "It is not really important to me to tell the truth," Samardzija said. "I am the type of guy that his play speaks for itself. Most importantly you do the things you are supposed to do to win ballgames." reported last November that the two sides had preliminary discussions about a three-year deal in the fall of 2012.

Extend the guy...

He may not want to sign now...

It is nothing more than a crap shoot, sign long term with the Cubs with no chance to win in your career there, or get out in the free market when your contract is up and play the numbers game.

Pitching is one thing the Cubs definitely need. why the Cubs are thinking about trading Samradzija who is probably the Cubs #1or2 pitcher makes no sense. The Cubs should try to extend his contract for a mninmum of2-3 years. The Edwin Jackson so far a has been a major diappointment.Villeneuva and Travis Wood have both also had a decent season so far.after that the number4-5 starters have been less than effective. The bullpen has been a disaster other than maybe Kevin Gregg who has taken over the closer role. Instead of worrying about aqiring Ellsbury If the Cubs Really are, they should be fixing major holes in their bullpen.

They will lock him up at some point, especially since Garza will likely be gone after (or during) this season. I think Shark and his agent want this season to play out to hopefully show last year wasn't a fluke and that he can be a durable #2 type starter going forward. Hopefully the Cubs' top draft pick this year (Mark Appel or Jonathan Gray) will become the #1 starter they need in the next 2-3 years.

They'll sign him at some point. Would make zero sense not to.

Saying someone is the Cubs #1 / #2 isn't saying a whole lot...

They're the Cubbies :-)

That said... They do need someone on the bump... Might as well extend him - but not for massive money.

Note also, that "Sam" is 28 and has a career record of 22-27. Is it possible that ol' Jeff is asking for more than he is worth? Hmmm.

Maybe Samardzija and the Cubbies disagree on how much dumping one's girlfriend to become a better pitcher is worth.

It's all about the money!
