Caps' core growing old before our eyes

07:19 AM ET 05.14 | Being sent packing by the Rangers on home ice suggests more than the box score in Washington. This is more than a concern, more than a beat-down in a win-or-go-home game. This is a fear, and the fear is this: Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom and Mike Green are going to wake up one day and realize they look more like old maids than young guns, and their NHL careers are going to be a monument to unfulfilled promise. ... [Each] year the nucleus of the team, especially Ovechkin, doesn't take the next step, the pressure to advance in May increases and the burden becomes greater. At some point, if they can't move past this rut, they're going to look behind them and realize no one wants to walk down that same street anymore with them.

The maybe next year stuff is wearing thin. They have a lot of talent but don't seem to use it.

May 14, 2013  08:24 AM ET

Meh, I do not believe the talent is all there. Outside of Ovie when he is motivated, they are not even as good as TOR.

Interesting point -- you might be spot on

I can't disagree with you. Toronto has more depth and balance

Rangers brought it last night...congrats Spiny and all you Rags fans. The Caps played well down the stretch and for flashes in the first round... I think they make a couple off season moves...and Oates behind the bench they'll be back.

What might be growing old is Ovie hitting 10+ times in an all-important game, but taking one shot. That might be growing old too.

Sorry. I have to disagree. The Caps don't have enough of the right kind of talent to get it done. Even with Semin gone, they're still too soft.

To be pushed around like that by the Rangers? Not enough testicular fortitude on that team, pure and simple.

Or ..... missing wide open nets when he does shoot.

I do want to say one thing about Mr. Ovechkin. When the horn sounded, he went over with his coaches to shake Torts' hand...I thought that was a pretty cool thing to do, I don't know if I ever saw that BEFORE the handshake line. And he was gracious to everyone, even a little smile with Giradi...say what you want, but that was pretty classy in my eyes.
As far as the hitting thing, i think he was trying to fire up an inexplicably flat team. Some notes:
Holtby, last night excluded...is a keeper...
Chimera and erskine are punks
those NHL advertss are becoming the "madden Curse" of the NHL...remember the "Flyers undefeated season one? Now backstom....

THAT ... right there ... explains the problem with the Caps: Gracious to everyone! The last thing you need to win in the playoffs.

One other note... Ribeiro. Is he worth resigning at $5/6M?

And the Rags payed extra attention to him. Why would they do that, I wonder?

Can appreciate it.

But how about firing up the team with a goal or two if possible, and do it by taking more shots on net?

Let the guys who get paid 2-3 Mil or even less do the hitting?

I know this - he is one incredibly frustrating dude...

not on this team....having two guys with heart when it counts doesn't help enough

The Rangers D did a pretty fair job of taking away his game, so he does what he can, that's what I saw. And quite frankly, those guys weren't doing it

May 14, 2013  10:28 AM ET

The Gaborik trade is looking pretty good right now. All 3 guys they brought in made a big difference. Bringing back Zuc was a good idea and Clowe was playing well before being injured. It's too bad Sather can't make deals like this in the off season.

A big problem with the Caps is Holtby. He is just not as good as they try to make him out to be. I've watched this guy in Hershey and he could not carry the team there. Hershey won the calder cups because of Neuvy, i was there. Holtby always gets beat by high shots and comes to far out of the goal all the time. Holtby chokes repeatedly and people need to recognize that one lucky playoff series last year (and they still lost in playoffs anyway) does not make a consistently good goalie.

Not so sure about that. It does not lie all at Holtby's feet. You can't win games if you don't score. You have look beyond Holtby.

Classy in the handshake line, and then says something like this:

"I am not saying there was a phone call from (the league), but someone just wanted Game 7," he told the paper.

"For the ratings. You know, the lockout, escrow, the league needs to make profit. I don't know whether the refs were predisposed against us or the league. But to not give obvious penalties (against the Capitals), while for us any little thing was immediately penalized."

Dear goodness. And the call Sid the whiner. Kay.
