07:00 AM ET 05.15 | It hasn't taken Matt Cavanaugh all that long to like what he sees from Jay Cutler. And hears. "Very impressed with Jay," Cavanaugh said. "Very impressed. He's borderline football brilliant. I think he gets it. I think he knows the game. I think he knows offensive schemes. I think he knows defenses." Cavanaugh indicated the coaching staff has been open to Cutler's input, and Cutler has had a say in what the new Bears offense will look like. "I think he's embracing how we want to approach things," he said. "We didn't come in here with a mandate that this is exactly how we're doing it and there is no leeway. We wanted his feedback. He's been willing to do that. It's a good working relationship now."

First impression ?

May 15, 2013  07:57 AM ET

The pic of Cutler appearing to fumble probably isn't fitting for the caption of excellent first impression. That being said, Cutler is their best QB in a long, long time. His biggest problem in Chicago has been his O-line. Maybe the rookie Long, who started only 10 games in college at Oregon, but has a Hall of Fame bloodline, will be able to protect him against guys like Suh, BJ Raji, and now Shariff Floyd. Maybe Bushrod will be a better pickup than expected. Maybe Carimi and Webb will also help keep Jay clean. If the O-line can protect Cutler, he could have a big year throwing to Forte, Alshon Jeffrey and Brandon Marshall, who played awesome last year. I'm not a fan of the Bears, but they definitely have some talent at the offensive skill positions, as well as some great playmakers like Peppers, Tillman and Jennings on D.

It'll be interesting how the new staff coaches this team and if they will outperform Lovie.

You mean they're not going with the Mike Martz "Jay Gets Clobbered" offense? I thought Cutler loved that scheme.

Alaska's right. If they don't fix the O-line, ever scheme is "Jay Gets Clobbered."

That's a lot of maybes and Carimi has been a no-show at OTA's this year after being a disappointment last year. I'd like to see Cutler do well, he's taken a pounding up there in Chicago.

I'm looking forward to this too. No disrespect intended, but Chicago had seen the best they were going to get from Lovie and his coaches. A change was due.

Seems like Matt is salivating over Jay... Young coach... He'll learn.

First impression ?

That would have been in 2009. This must be a "new" impression, guess the first one was not a keeper. sounds like mulligan.

I'm guessing his 2nd, 3rd, 4th 5th interceptions will make that first impression moot.

May 15, 2013  09:37 AM ET

He has made quite a few impressions in the turf at Soldier Field the last few years.

Cutler does impressions? I'll bet he does a great David Carr.

Hmmmmm....verrrrrry interesting.

That would seem to contradict the players' statements that the field is like concrete.

It is, but then Suh unleashes a Bunker-Buster Sack and Jay's driven right into that turf.

Guess its easy to make a good impression when your playing against no-body.....wait ill gameday and see how that impression is then.

Cutler looks like Hans Solo being sealed in Carbonite for delivery to Jabba the Hutt.

Pre-season is what we like to call a "target-rich environment."
