07:09 AM ET 05.15 | From St. Louis, the Mets are handling top pitching prospect Zack Wheeler with care. [Wheeler] is heading back to New York to be examined by team doctors after he complained of soreness in his right collarbone. "I think we're being a little bit conservative given who it is and making sure our guys see him right away," assistant general manager John Ricco said. Wheeler, 22, likely will miss his next scheduled outing. The righthander first mentioned the soreness on Monday, two days after his previous outing for Triple-A Las Vegas. Wheeler showed no sign of an injury as his velocity registered in his typical range. Nevertheless, Ricco said the Mets opted to take a cautious approach.

Pretty harsh to make the kid pitch in Vegas, that whole league is great for hitters and tough on pitchers.

QUOTE(#2):

That's the league their AAA team is in. Where else is he going to pitch?

A fair number of organizations use AAA to keep scrubs warm for the majors in case of injury or trades and have their prospects basically top out at AA before the majors.

Better that it's his collarbone rather than the soreness be in his pitching elbow.

QUOTE(#7):

True. But that is definitely a strange area for a pitcher to have an injury

Might be a strained pectoral muscle or a strained deltoid. Both are right there in that area.
