'Stage fright' to blame for Ottawa

07:21 AM ET 05.15 | Game 1 didn't exactly go as planned for Ottawa -- in fact, it was the kind of game it hopes to just forget about and move beyond. The Senators dropped their second round opener to the Penguins 4-1, with plenty of blame to go around, but the Senators wisely tipped their caps to a superior Penguins team on the first night. The good news? Ottawa's band of rookies now knows how it feels to face Sidney Crosby and friends in a playoff setting. "If we had any kind of stage fright or youthful jitters, that should be behind us and now it's up to us to make it a series," said Senators head coach Paul MacLean. MacLean said the youth of his team was a factor in the first period, and that was certainly evident on a Jared Cowen-Eric Gryba mishap that led to Pittsburgh's second goal, by Evgeni Malkin.

When they came right back and tied the game, my thought was "Here we go"...

Then the Pens went.

Pick it up, Sens.... Or this will be over quick.

It's OK. They can continue.

Let's Go Pens!

LOL at this article. Yeah it was stage fright, not the fact the Pens are the better team.
As much as I hate Neil, he seemed to be the only one on the ice for them that understood what was going on. Did James Neal decide to pick up Malkin's slack with the dumb penalties?

May 15, 2013  08:39 AM ET

It had all the feel of a regular season game.

May 15, 2013  08:44 AM ET

Sens better wake up.. .cuz the Pens made em look like they didn't even belong on the same ice. I think they'll get it together some better but I don't look for this to go to the 7 game limit...no way

indeed...
As far as neil, he is a first rate moron. And whomever was calling the game on NBC that said "good on Chris neil" after he was looking to punch someone...anyone...after they too were getting schooled...you sir, are an idiot. let Ottawa worry about playing the game, you know...scoring goals, stopping pittsburgh from doing the same. If Neil was trying to send a message, the only message I would have seen if I was on Pittsburgh was that Ottawa and Monsieur le Bag de **** were frustrated and can be 'gotten to'

I was thinking the same thing about Neal. You don't do that kind of stuff in the playoffs.

Pens looked good, but they looked pretty good in game 1 of the last series too.

Didn't though? After the Isles series the first game looked like it was being played in slow motion.

that goes without saying....the only reason he jumped Boyle last year was because Boyle isn't really a fighter...and his back was turned probably

Even the fans seemed to have a sort of a 'ho hum' attitude in the final period of play.

In the regular season game after the Karlsson injury, he looks to fight Cooke, Neal, LeTang.
Everyone but Steve MacIntyre, who we all know was only there to protect the Pens from that punk.

I'm betting the Pens were pretty worried once it was 4-1. :-)

The Toronto/Boston game was actually going through my mind. These are the Pens and they can be cruising one minute and in a nose dive the next. I'm going to be taking lots of Danny Lime's nerve medicine before long.

I'm Prime Minister Stephen Harper and I approve this message.
