WR recruit picks rapping over MSU - or did he?

06:59 PM ET 05.15 | This much is clear: Michigan State football and rap music do not mix.

Tuesday, news broke that 3-star wide receiver recruit Jay Harris was turning down his scholarship offer to play for the Spartans so he could pursue his rap career. Later, it was reported that wasn't the case: Michigan State had actually stripped his scholarship, a response to Harris' videos posted to Youtube under the name Jay DatBull. Harris' songs are, well, quite lyrically explicit, and the videos frequently show him smoking substances that don't appear to be legal in most states. Perhaps both sides of the story are a little bit true. Regardless, Mark Dantonio and Datbull will not have a chance to work together, as the high schooler is going to be writing rhymes instead of snagging catches.

I won't comment on the kid, but I would like to know who was his primary recruiter. How do you miss a red flag like the kid is considering giving up football for rap music?

oh please. a "rap career". what a joke, rap that is. can't read or write music? can't play an instrument? can't really sing? have i got a career for you... rap star! today's society in a nutshell. simply dumbed down and lazy. boy i needed to get that off my chest.

At least you're honest.... honestly stupid and ignorant.

i fully understand your response. but it is misguided. the kid had a shot at a free college education. instead, it appears he's going to take the easier route. one he may very well regret. as far as "rap" goes, i appreaciate "music", not "rap". but, i guess i have to back down and say, to each his own.

Cranky old man is old. If you don't get rap, that's fine. I don't get Hall and Oates, either. But to imply that he's lazy because he chose rap? Dumb. Rock is lazy in comparison to jazz, but I don't hear any of the old fogies calling rock lazy.

i never could stand hall and oates. what was with that little guy with the mustache? rock is pretty much dead. country is pretty much dead. as a general rule, anything mainstream is crap. it's all generated in new york/la and lacks any substance. it's all glitz and glamour. has very little to do with music. still some pretty good blues going on but it's off the beaten path and so many of the blues greats have died off. my implication on the kid is he's opting for what may appear to be easy money and fame (good luck) vs. a free college education. what are his parents thinking?

His scholarship was pulled because he blazes it and curses?

Just who exactly do these schools think the rest of their scholarships are being filled by?

Pretty sure almost all of those dudes curse and smoke bud.
