06:57 AM ET 05.17 | For Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith, his young NFL career has become a case of more money creating more problems. For the first time, in an hour-long interview with The Dallas Morning News, [Smith] opened up to share his cautionary tale about how money changes people and how greed can run rampant around NFL players who become instant millionaires. ... Last October, John Schorsch -- Smith's Dallas-based attorney at the time -- said Smith's "mom and/or the stepdad threatened the physical well-being of Tyron and the life of his girlfriend." Smith filed a protective order against his parents last summer. ... He said he's open to reconciling with his family when the timing is right. "If all the incidents stop," Smith said.

Money changes everything ... unfortunately.

Pretty eye-opening to a 20 year old kid when his family turns into a bunch of leeches right before his eyes. Sad that the only way he keeps them all away is via restraining orders.

But good for him. You read the article and clearly see that at 22, he gets it. Unlike Titus Young, Tyron Smith is going to be just fine in this big ol' world.

Yikes! You'd think his family would be the people he could trust the most. It's not like he signed a $90MM contract and has millions to burn. He make $1.5MM per year. That's not chump change but it's certainly not enough after taxes to support a bunch of leeches.

Geez, maybe my folks aren't as bad as I thought.

I still say that the Roy Tarpley saga is the most glaring example of a family of leeches I've ever seen. That one had an incredibly sad ending to it.

Good on Tyron.

What's crazy is he already had given them a bunch of money and was probably going to keep it up during his career. But it wasn't enough for these greedy leeches. Good for Smith! If you can't trust family, who can you trust? Hopefully he will be able to trust his advisers without them trying to swindle him too.

Good for Tyron Smith for dealing with this early in what should be a long career. He appears to be the only grown up in the room.

Step dad. You are right, he has to stop being such a nice guy. He needs to find someone to basically put his money in trust, give him an allowance and make any other money transactions go through that financial adviser, business manager. Period. He cannot even trust himself in this situation. He messed it up before by letting it get this far. That way he can just tell them, hey I could not give you anything if I wanted to....

Moral of the story: Don't let your parents join your posse.

May 17, 2013  09:40 AM ET

Sad for this kid; should be at time of joy in his life after reaching the NFL; too bad his parents are dirt bags!

May 17, 2013  10:01 AM ET

Y'know, it's really ironic, but Dez Bryant could probably help get him through this.

Probably an unfair generalization. In most situations the folks hanging on to the superstars looking for money aren't parents

While - I agree that he should give something (I am assuming they DID help rear him) - to become leeches is wholly unacceptable. Don't know all the details - but the physical harm threat - is inexcusable in ANY instance.

Exactly - money does NOT remove problems - it only changes them....

I wonder if his momma said, "I brought you into this world.... I can take you out!!"

Hey, some times relatives don't even wait for their kids to make it in the NFL. Take the case of Cam Newton's father trying to extort money from Mississippi State to have his son play there.
