11:23 AM ET 05.17 | Joel Hanrahan underwent surgery this afternoon to repair a torn flexor tendon in his right arm and more damage was discovered than originally expected. The right-hander wound up undergoing Tommy John Surgery as well. Hanrahan will miss at least the next 12 to 15 months, putting a return at the earliest of mid-2014. Hanrahan produced mediocre results in limited action for the Boston Red Sox this year. In just 7.1 IP he'd allow eight runs (9.82 ERA) on 10 hits, walking six. He'd earn the save in three of his first four outings on the year, but things would seemingly fall apart after. Needless to say, it wasn't the results that Boston thought they were bringing in when they acquired him over the winter from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Man, I think teams should just send closers for surgery as soon as they sign them as free agents.

He was acquired in a trade from the Pirates, along with Brock Holt, for Ivan DeJesus Jr., Jerry Sands, Stolmy Pimentel and Mark Melancon.

would it be better IF the teams reinforced their ligaments ,shoulders and elbows ligaments before hitting the big leagues??i mean, this is more crazy than anything else,TJS has been up in% in the last 4 years, about 15 % more surgery's than in any other time, back in the ninthys'TJS years we keep hearing and seen more related injuries like fallin politics!!

but but that shouldn't be a reason to get injury in the first season in boston/unless is a damage goods then that explains everything...

should bailey get the closer job?now that the hanrahan is out for another season and a half??because hanrahan wouldn't be ready until 2014 by september at least!!!

Wow. 15%? I wonder if it's an anomaly or a trend.

I think both teams knew he sucked.

Now, you know that, and I know that... but somebody's bucking for a promotion. It's probably that pederast Hanrahan. I don't know. All I know is if I don't go back with something you and your son-in-law are gonna be the scapegoats of the week.

When he was "on" he was unhittable but when he was off, it was a wild ride. Towards the end of last year he just couldn't control his slider so I'm wondering if something in his arm wasn't working quite right even back then.

Thanks for telling us now!
Great trade.

Not sure that Melancon would ever have made it in Boston. Relief pitchers are a real crap shoot, even from year to year.
