07:09 AM ET 05.20 | A J.R. Smith-Chris Smith combo package may be nearing reality in New York. The Post has learned point guard Chris Smith, J.R. Smith's brother who injured his knee during Knicks training camp, has fired his agent, Marc Cornstein, and will hire J.R.'s rep, CAA superagent Leon Rose, who also handles Carmelo Anthony. J.R. Smith is expected to opt out of his contract and re-sign with the Knicks in a four-year deal starting at about $5 million because the Knicks own his early-Bird rights rules. The Knicks could be outbid for J.R. Smith by an under-the-cap team, though it's unlikely considering his playoff flop. But having Chris Smith as part of the package has convinced the Sixth Man of the Year he wants to stay.

Can two guys accept the mininum

I doubt any NBA team including the Knicks would like to be forced to take a joint package. I think JR will probably be back with Knicks -- but without strings/brothers attached.

they will if the contract includes party every night

He is a Knick for life. No teams will give him more then $5 million a year after his performance and lousy attitude in the playoffs. He is a known knucklehead and has proven that in the playoffs.

Oh many congratulations to the Knicks for having JR as a life-time Knick. Can't wait to see his jersey raised up the rafters in the garden.

Can the Knicks sign and trade him or are there restrictions because they're over the luxury tax line? Because I don't think he's the kind of player they want to hang their hat on for another 4 years.

I'm not sure but if I'm the Knicks I l try to go in a different direction. Smith is not the #2 scorer that you can depend on. I think he has proven that.

Two Smiths and Melo on the same team!?!? How are they all going to get 20+ shots off a game? Can you play with two basketballs on offense?

I pray this is the case.I physically don't think I can handle watching him for 3-4 more years. The team dynamic has to change and shump needs to play Let him go.....addition by subtraction. We can find gunners. He's just to stupid to depend on

Shump looks ready to break out, jgb. He's a solid player. Especially if he keeps developing that outside shot.

If they let jr go and give him a bigger role- I don't see why he can't be a 16-18 pt guy next year ANDplay lights out d

Because Woodson won't let him... He seems to have beef with certain players on the team (Shump, Copeland) if they sneeze wrong while others he seems to let sly if they f up the court...

Who would you rather play, Shumbert Novak, or Copeland? It really can not be one of them since Felton, Melo, Smith, and Chandler or Martin need to play big minutes. If Copeland could play defense he would play more, just like Novak. That is why Shumbert is so important. While not that good on offense right now, they need his defense.

JR Smith is best when he wants to rebound and dish the ball. I would rather have a line of 12 points, 7 boards, 4 assists, which he could easily do than 20 points, 2 boards, 1 assist. He is not good enough on offense to not do the other things that need to be done like defense and rebounding.

I'm not too sure you 100% caught what I'm saying but in a nutshell Woodson gave a little too much minutes for certain guys who fizzled out during the series and for others not enough burn to get into any kind of flow. Shumpert, Copeland and even Novack needed to get more minutes in the past series as it was on the offensive side the Knicks struggled mightily. Especially when 3- 4 team mates stood around to watch ISO, ISO, ISO, ISO ball - Indy knew what to expect after a certain point and defended against the ISO very well.....
