Why Torts ices Hagelin on PP: 'He stinks'

07:18 AM ET 05.20 | When asked about why speedy winger Carl Hagelin hasn't seen more time on the Rangers' disappointing power play this postseason, John Tortorella was direct. "Because he stinks on the power play," Tortorella said Saturday. "I don't know why. I wish I could play him more on the power play but every time I put him on, he stinks." ... [Even] with his improved production (plus-5 overall), and the Rangers' power play at an unsightly 2-31 in the playoffs, Hagelin has been used sparingly on the man advantage, with a total of 1:44 of ice time in eight games. "He's a jitterbug and he screws it up," Tortorella said. "But the power play stinks. It's true. That's why he may get an opportunity."

But the real question is, can Hagelin take Tortorella in a fight?

Nice...
Of course, the quote on its own (which is no doubt how most will see/hear it) is more fuel to the anti-Torts crowd, but he makes a valid point....he didn't say he stinks all around, he was being truthful. Let's face it, not everyone is cut out for PP...(which sadly, means most everyone in a NYR sweater!)

I don't count myself among the anti-Torts crowd, but calling out a player like this in the media at this time seems a bit misguided. I appreciate the honesty, but he can be honest with the player privately rather than embarrassing him publicly. You know reporters are going to ask Hagelin about it, so why create a distraction?

I don't think he was calling him out per se`.
He was merely astating that he wasn't any good on the power play, because someone asked him (more than once I believe) why he wasn't using him on the PP. And he was pretty complimentary about him all around....

quite frankly, I wish he'd call out a few of these guys that are inexplicably absent (Richards?)

Perhaps he only needs some quality coaching. Hmmmmm, too bad!

Agree. Talk to him privately.

Ed Zachary. With the quality players loitering in NY this should be a top 5 PP.

:-)

Many have hit on this, so no one particular to quote...if the PP itself is awful and this is a second year player, perhaps you should look at the coaching. I remember him being spectacular on all special teams at Michigan.

Giving Torts some benefit of the doubt, maybe it's a joke and he's talked to Hagelin about it, not to take it as calling him out (after all, he did put himon the PP last night). But on the other hand...no, not sure Torts has a joking bone in his body--there's only tough love or three finger love.

My girlfriend can take Tortorella! And, she's 65!

May 20, 2013  09:56 AM ET

"Because he stinks on the power play," Tortorella said Saturday.

Ahhhhh!!! Nothing like some encouraging words from your coach! Is there?

"I don't know why. I wish I could play him more on the power play but every time I put him on, he stinks." ...

Maybe he's scared of Bears and **** his pants every time he sees Lucic coming at him? :-)

As a Devil fan, I love Torts. I hope he stays with the Rangers for a very very long time.

You're starting to sound eerily like Hank! Scary!

a few things:
1) the power play, and again...I try to watch some part ove every game if I can...has been crapola for a long time...under Renney, Campbell, Torts....and there have been some high quality guys over the course of those 3 regimes
2) Actually, Torts is only "short/terse...whatever" with stupidity (watch him with PM...PRICELESS)He actually can be a pretty funny guy...
3) He more than likely did say something 1st to Hagelin, but he isn't wrong, which id the crux of the whole thing...someone with Hagelin's "skill set" may not be cut out for the PP...and a good coach knows this.
4) It was the same with Gaborik and Jagr on the shoot-out....both of them brilliant players/scorers...on the shootout...not so much

That Tortsie is a motivator huh? Seriously, I am NOT a Torts hater, but that just seems pointless. As is the pp so far. :)

That's not how we like it to play here--it's only funny to us if he's a humorless prick. But I understand this has to be a joke (or he's so far from a players coach that he's actually urinated on their lockers while they're on the ice at practice). Much the same way I say to people: "Nothing personal, but you are an awful human being."
