Rights issues could delay ACC network

04:47 PM ET 05.20 | The ACC has for some time been talking with ESPN about a potential television network for the conference, but there may be a roadblock in the form of rights issues that will delay progress. ESPN would need all of the ACC's syndicated rights in order to found a network, but those are controlled by both Fox Sports Net and Raycom through 2027. The ACC could buy back those rights in order to get things moving, but it appears ESPN is in no hurry to get an ACC network up and running. A channel launch probably would not come until at least 2016, according to industry sources.

During football season, it will simply be referred to as the Florida State/Clemson Network.

If and when Notre Dame becomes a full ACC member, ESPN will bend over backwards to acquire an ACC television package.

By the time that happens, the Fox/Raycom contract would have expired.

And that's the problem -- the only thing worthwhile for an ACC network is the basketball. The only reason ESPN would buy out Fox and Raycom is to keep Fox from setting it up themselves.

If, and it's a HUGH if, ND joined the ACC as a full member, I suspect the NBCSportsChannel would be in the running for to set up the conference channel.

The ACC would have more suitors than a young heiress.
