07:04 AM ET 05.22 | Play-calling duties may no longer be part of Jason Garrett's job description, but he still has a job. [Many] wondered if his title would be next. But team owner Jerry Jones says Garrett -- coming off back-to-back 8-8 seasons -- isn't coaching for his job in 2013. "No, no he's not," Jones told NFL.com's Albert Breer on Tuesday. "No. What we're doing is taking the assets that we have and Jason being right at the top -- certainly our premiere asset -- and we're using him to the best of our ability." The Cowboys have yet to clarify exactly who will call plays after Bill Callahan was named offensive coordinator in January. They don't expect to make that decision until after the first preseason game. That makes zero sense."

As long as Jerry Jones owns this team they will never win another Superbowl. They are stuck at mediocre.

That sounds a lot like the vote of confidence JJ gave Wade Phillips a few weeks before he was fired.

The last time the Cowboys made any sense was when a different JJ was in charge......Jimmy Johnson. Between this thread and the Vick thread, the NFC east will be a fun watch this year!

Jerry, nobody believes what you are saying

May 22, 2013  08:22 AM ET

When the owner starts referring to you as an asset your days are limited. Garrett might coach all of this year, but you can be sure Jerry has entered the codes and has his thumb on the launch button.

Why does he KEEP talking??

Does anyone on this site read the comic strip Dilbert? JJ is sounding an awful lot like the pointy haired boss.

Yes. There are some differences that I can't quite put into words, but very similar, sure.

Inside the mind of JJ.." It's not a step back for Jason. It's actually a step forward for Jason in my mind."

Reminds me of Cool Hand Luke:
JJ-" You gonna get used to wearin' them chains afer a while, Luke. Don't you never stop listenin' to them clinking. 'Cause they gonna remind you of what I been saying. For your own good. "

Garrett-" Wish you'd stop bein' so good to me, cap'n."

In my opinion the team is not doing poorly because of Jason Garrett.

Has he hurt the team with the field goal crap in recent years? Sure, but JG is a young coach making mistakes.

He has done a great job as Dallas has rebuilt and Cowboy fans do not want to admit, but they had to rebuild...think about it :

They have replaced 5 starters on the line since Romo took over, the RB, his backup, and both WR's. They have rebuilt the backers and the corners and in 6 seasons.

That is a lot of change to youth.

TO and Glenn were at WR. Barber and Jones at RB. Jenkins and Newman at CB and the backers have changed constantly from James to others.

In doing so, they have had a tight cap to manage as well.

I am not advocating Jason stay the coach forever, I am saying he is doing the best with what he has been dealt.

Personally, I think he has tremendous upside, but in Dallas, everyone wants to win now and it would not surprise me if a guy named Jon Gruden is coaching this team in 2014.

I may very well lose my mind if this happens.

Well, it makes sense for Chuckie to be there, considering the horror show JJ is producing.

Gruden has had his chances to get back on the sidelines the last couple of years, and he's chosen to stay in the booth. I think he likes the attention, but I don't think he wants to trade his soft job now for the hard work of being a head coach again.

If Chuckie shows up in Dallas I'm done with them. I'll never watch another game, buy another sweatshirt, or over priced beer until JJ is in the grave.

May 22, 2013  09:57 AM ET

per JJ; Jason is certainly their premiere asset....really????? Jason is your premiere asset...based on what??? This guy will never shut his pie hole...he says some really stupid stuff....

May 22, 2013  10:23 AM ET

Garrett was well aware of how JJ ran the team when JJ hired him before hiring Wade. I was definitely no Wade Phillips fan but the team's failures during those four years were also Garrett failures, too, since he had control of the offense.

Garrett should be coaching for his job this season, despite what JJ says.

Can anyone name me a team that Bill Callahan has helped in the last 10 years? He certainly didn't help the Jets and the Cowboys didn't look that impressive.. but now rumor has it that he will be calling the plays? LOL, this is going to be funny!

I don't think he'll be calling the plays. JJ just needed a first class whipping boy in his stable.

May 22, 2013  10:30 AM ET

If that's the best of your ability, JJ, then you have definitely reached your level of incompetency. Revamp your organizational structure. Stop being a control freak and micromanaging your company. Get your egocentric derriere out of the day-to-day operations, hire the best management possible, and end this failed example of business practice. In other words: Fire Yourself!

Signed, A Long-Suffering Dallas Cowboys Fan.

That would make for some interesting reality TV.
