07:06 AM ET 05.22 | Broadway Joe is at it again. Joe Namath calls Gang Green's prized rookie QB Geno Smith a "sensational athlete" with "good size." And Namath also thinks drafting Smith was unnecessary. "No, I don't think they needed a quarterback," Namath said at the United Way's 20th annual Gridiron Gala at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel on Tuesday. "They needed the other positions filled. Possibly offensive line. They got some defensive line. The safeties are still questionable. The outside linebackers are still questionable." To Namath, the Jets already had a quality quarterback in embattled starter Mark Sanchez. Sanchez has struggled in the last two seasons. But Namath attributed that to "distractions."

They wasted the pick because Geno Smith is not good enough.

Just as Sanchez has proven that he's not an NFL quarterback, Namath has proven that he's not an NFL pundit.

And yet they both still have gainful employment in New York. Go figure.

and in response, Geno asked to wear his college number with the Jets.

Someone needs to tell Broadway Joe that he is about to wear out his welcome on Broadway...

This is just lazy reporting. If its a slow news day and a New York reporter is feeling unmotivated, he just picks up the phone and calls Joe. Joe will undoubtedly say something stupid and controversial. Reporter submits his manufactured "story". Plenty of time left in the day now to hit the links...or the bar.

May 22, 2013  08:13 AM ET

Wouldn't the Jets pick be a waste, no matter who they selected?

And since Walter Cronkite - what reporters are actually doing anything with journalistic integrity? Welcome to the new - News Sensationalism.....

Oh, he's still there, if by "there" you mean in a bottle in his liquor cabinet.

Joe hasn't been "there" in quite some time. Not too sure he was even there when he was relevant. Just a has-been trying to stay in the press because people still care what he has to say.

They want to build up Sanchez's self esteem by having him "win" a quarterback competition, even though the others aren't really NFL calibre either.

"Te-bow! Te-bow! Te-bow!" will become "Ge-no! Ge-no! Ge-no!" after the first Sanchez interception.

(Rex won't call for the Buttfumble until later in the season.)
