Alfredsson predicts series defeat

07:21 AM ET 05.23 | Perhaps, after more than 1,100 games in the NHL, Daniel Alfredsson has earned the right to play the realist. [Alfredsson] says the Ottawa Senators probably won't come back against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Those words, after a 7-3 Game 4 loss on Wednesday put Alfredsson's team down 3-1 in the series, might be a strict motivational ploy. But if the Sens played their last home game of the season, and Alfredsson the last home came of his career, he didn't seem to take any chances. ... The quote Twitter seized on after the game came when he was asked if the Sens could come back from the deficit: "Probably not. They have too much depth," he said, according to Erin Nicks of NHL.com. ... "We don't have much going for us right now. Maybe that's the way we like it."

In his head he's playing mind games but in his heart he knows it's true.

The Pens seemed to kick it into another gear after giving up the short-handed goal.

This is why Alfreddson's name is on the Cup soooooooooooo many times

Finally, an honest response from an athlete.

Give you two guesses who didn't play a little D on that one, but you will only need one. Sigh.

IF the Pens advance to the next series, they better not make the same mistakes on defense, etc. Cause their opponent will take advantage.

I am not unhappy about the score last night, but the score reflected the opposition giving up more than anything. Pens shouldn't expect it happening again.

Alfredsson didn't say anything earth shattering bad, but he didn't say anything good either. He could have/should have said: "I believe we can rally back," even if he doesn't.

This here is what I have been discussing since mid-season with my rabid Pen-coworker. Like the Rangers achilles heel has been two-folded (the PP and finding the back of the net) and although known; it has become exposed. We all know you guys can score multiple touchdowns especially if given multiple opportunities on the PP; but the shortcomings of the D and the G-Tender is going to come frothing to the top against the best teams.

How about Sids back-hander......???

I agree....if anything he should have just kept quiet because this is going to get blown up for more than it is...

The Sens have them right where they want them.

May 23, 2013  09:48 AM ET

Whats it all about, Alfie?

May 23, 2013  09:59 AM ET

The only way Ottawa was going to win the series was if Anderson was lights out perfect.

And maybe not even then.

At the end if the game the Fans gave the team a nice hand, knowing it was the last time they'd see them this year.

Let's Go Pens!
