Charlotte Motor Speedway wants X Games

12:03 PM ET 05.25 | On the eve of Charlotte Motor Speedway's premier race, track officials are prepping for their chance to land the nation's biggest extreme sports event: ESPN's X Games. The Charlotte area -- and Concord in particular -- hope to impress the network's decision-makers on their June 4-5 site visit to the speedway, which is a finalist to host the event for three years beginning in 2014. Beating out three other cities would mean topping Detroit's strong fan support, Chicago's large media market and the younger demographic of Austin, Texas. But both speedway and Cabarrus County tourism officials see a practical advantage to hosting the extreme sports event at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The facilities are in place, and the speedway has experience operating big events.

Greg Zipadelli, the competition director at Stewart-Haas Racing and longtime confidante of Tony Stewart, said the team has fallen behind on technology relative to the top NASCAR Sprint Cup teams. Zipadelli said the combination of adding a third car for Danica Patrick, converting to the new Generation-6 cars and shuffling personnel internally has left SHR well behind top teams like Joe Gibbs Racing and Hendrick Motorsports so far this season. Coming into Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, #39-Ryan Newman is 17th in points, #14-Stewart 21st and #10-Patrick 28th. Thursday night, Newman qualified 10th for the Coca-Cola 600, with Patrick 24th and Stewart 25th

The sunshine in turn three at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Thursday hampered Trevor Bayne on his qualifying lap, but a sunny day was just what Bayne and the crew of his #21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion needed to qualify for the Wood Brothers' 1,400th Sprint Cup start. Should the rain have made its way to the track just 2 hours sooner, most likely qualifying would've been cancelled. The Woods, with their limited schedule, would have missed the race, as they had the fewest attempts to qualify at this point in the season, of the teams entered in the Coca-Cola 600.

Bayne will line up 29th for his team's milestone start, and just being in the starting field is a great relief, and a proud moment, for team co-owner Eddie Wood.

"We all feel very fortunate to be where we are today," Wood said. "We couldn't have done it without having great drivers in our cars over the years, from my dad in the beginning to Trevor Bayne today. And we couldn't have done it without the support of Ford Motor Company. They've been right there with us through the great times and the struggles."

From CNN -- (CNN) -- With a daring move in the last few laps, Tony Kanaan of Brazil passed American Ryan Hunter-Reay and won the 97th Indianapolis 500 under a yellow caution flag ...

Congratulation Tony Kanaan -- a solid Chevy win ...

Fox got lucky.. could you imagine what might have happened if that 'cable' had not been nylon and instead was steel??.. might be time to remove that 'awesome camera angle' before something bad really happens

When it works -- it is awesome! However, we now understand why we put "destruct-buttons" on missiles!

1,700 miles of motorsports.

I hate Monaco. Might as well have floats and marching bands for that one.
