Golson leaves ND shell-shocked

07:17 AM ET 05.27 | It's not as if the Irish haven't seen more than their share of drama lately. [But Everett Golson's] evacuation from the hallowed halls of Notre Dame will be the one that hurts the most and figures to cause the most distress. Seems like the celebration after the win at Southern Cal was a decade ago. A spanking in South Beach, NFL flirtations, a fictitious girlfriend, mysterious and seemingly rash bailouts, and now the Golson situation have shell-shocked a program that was on top of the world. ... Seems like an awful lot of negativity is swirling around the Notre Dame football program these days. Wouldn't figure it to be a normal by-product of sudden success. Could it be a matter of dealing with a bunch of five-star egos? Having athletes seeking academic shortcuts?

Bah!

He'll end up at an SEC school where getting an education is not a prerequisite to playing sports.

I got the impression that he wanted to go back to Notre Dame.

2 yesterday, 1 today (so far). Over/under on Gholson/ND story threads was set at 5. Looks like we should all take the over for sure.

Damn, I wish Piratey was around for this.

May 27, 2013  08:55 AM ET

Is this really interesting? He's a great athlete but an average QB on a second rate team in Indiana.

May 27, 2013  09:04 AM ET

I find it hard to believe that a team that has top 10 recruiting every season does not have something else waiting in the wings, especially considering that Kelly's offense doesn't really require a Luck-type QB.

To me, this is really the most disappointing part. I don't know if I can watch a whole seasons under Rees.

You know what is interesting, the QB at Notre Dame was under academic pressure to perform in the classroom and made a mistake. He now will be held accountable by his fellow students and MUST ask his fellow students if he may come back to campus! Kinda bet you wouldn't have seen this issue happen with Johnny Football as he takes his classes from home with his mommy's help! Big difference when you play football at Notre Dame! You actually have to go to class by yourself and for yourself!

May 27, 2013  09:34 AM ET

Studies have shown over 70% of online college courses taken have involved cheating and we know Johnny would never cheat since he hasn't taken a class on campus yet!

No worries. Touch down Jesus will see us through.

The latest rendition of "the story that won't die"?
Maybe they'll stop running Rutgers' stories now that they have a ND story.

Definitely take the over.

It's kinda like trying to spell Khadafi or Ghadafi or was it Khaddafi.

Says he's coming back. Perhaps he'll be the Julius Jones the RB that took a similar academic tumble

We might get as much mileage out of Golson's expulsion as Manti Te'o's cyber girlfriend. So, Domer homers: any chance of Gunner Kiel coming back to South Bend, or has that ship sailed?

Gunner kiboshed his return yesterday via a twitter tweet.

You rocket scientists obviously could easily have played ball at ND, met the school's academic expectations and had their graduation rate! Yea right! **** can't even spell Golson's name right!

Someone needs a hug...

It's disappointing that this happened but I am impressed that Golson "appears" to have taken personal responsibility for it. ND did what it had to do to maintain the integrity of what it preaches to athletes and their parents. There had to be consequences for the young man but there is a path for him to return if it is important to him. The football team may suffer losing Golson but the University went up a notch for how the situation has been handled (in my humble yet slightly ND biased opinion).

+1 from what I read yesterday. He's looking to come back at some point.
