02:58 PM ET 05.27 | New York Rangers defenseman Marc Staal does not believe his injured right eye will ever fully heal. However, he does expect to return to elite level performance before next season. Staal sustained an orbital bone fracture after taking a deflected shot to the face against the Philadelphia Flyers in March. He missed the rest of the season, san one postseason game against the Washington Capitals. Staal says there was a tear in his eye, which cause cramping and disorientation. He already feels better and hopes to be fully ready by training camp.

Cherry's right again - blocking shots is great, when you're not just sticking a stick out in front of anyone.

I really think they need to force them to wear a mask. With Staal and Sid getting hit off of deflections they need some protection.

QUOTE(#2):

Next he can drive a car without wearing a seatbelt. Just as stupid.

I just hope he recovers his sight fully. Something like this can Staal his career. Get well soon and best wishes.

Gretzky was interviewed about this and said visors should now be mandatory for all new players in the league, however, he didn't think forcing a grizzled veteran to put one is necessary if he's never worn one before and doesn't want to, the policy would be grand-fathered in. Made sense to me. Most players out of the minors have been wearing them their entire career so most are keeping them on in the NHL anyway.

Going around with one eye is not cool.

Staal's eye would be 100% fine, and Sid's jaw would not have been broken if the NHL adopted NCAA style cages. Many of us remember when NHL players did not wear helmets. No one would want to go back to those days, especially with the current awareness of concussions.
