07:11 AM ET 05.29 | Paul Pierce's future lies in the hands of the Celtics, and there remains all manner of speculation as to where that might take him. The latest comes to us from the News-Herald in Ohio, which ran a story that cited sources indicating that Boston is now "likely" to buy Pierce out of his contract. But for it's worth, I spoke with a team source this weekend who immediately laughed off this report. The funny part wasn't the idea that the Celtics will buy out Pierce, because, as we know, that's obviously within the realm of possibility. The joke was the suggestion that the C's are "likely" to do anything at this point in time.

After watching you this year in the playoffs...LORD you got old quick....Hell you couldnt even get by Kidd.....just retire.

Is it retire or go to another team and try to get that second ring....would make one hell of a player off the bench for a season.

Watch him get bought out and then join Ray w/ the Heat...

No way Pierce is back, he was trade bait this season. They need to make room to make a run at Jefferson.

Pierce should go to Miami.

I don't know why this is such a big deal.... life will go on wherever Pierce plays or even if he retires.

Since Rondo got hurt Pierce averaged 18pts/6reb/5asst....ONLY other player to do so was LeBron James. The Captain has plenty left in the tank, just needs Rondo back to reduce the physical strain on his body.

Why is this Story coming out of the "News-Herald in Ohio"?

Is the Source 'familiar with the Celtics Thinking'?

No one doubts his skills, but he CANNOT do that over 82 games plus playoffs. He's just not that anymore. He can be a GREAT value player for a contender like the Spurs or Heat or OKC or even the Grizzlies.

Jeff Green is no Paul Pierce. The Captain doesn't "disappear" like Green.

You're right, Green is no Pierce. But the dude is making $11M per, make him earn it!!!!

As A Long Time Celtics Fan! I believe that The C's owe it to Pierce to let him earn that 15 mil. It'll pay off next year when Pierce decides he's not ready to wrap it up and the C's resign him to a veteran contract.
