Saban only SEC coach against 9-game schedule

07:54 PM ET 05.29 | 13-1 was Alabama's record this past season, and it was also the result of a straw poll amongst SEC coaches to expand the league's schedule to nine games. The one holdout? Of course, Nick Saban.

The non-binding vote was meant to gauge interest in changing from an eight-game format with four non-conference games - and four opportunities for team's in the country's strongest conference to schedule less prestigious opponents - and a beefier nine-game conference slate. Many around the league still expect it to expand its schedule one day, but as for now, nobody seems particularly interested in making life more difficult. Besides, of course, the guy who won the last two national titles.

Why schedule teams that might beat you if you can schedule pushovers?

Like maybe the title of article is completely backwards, Saban is only one in FAVOR of 9 game schedule

May 29, 2013  08:30 PM ET

Geez, the interns screwed up another one. Saban is the only coach in favor of a 9 game sked.

May 29, 2013  08:30 PM ET

Dammit, ninja'd.

Realistically...every contract has clauses for bonuses depending on how far one goes in the "after season".

So why would one schedule teams that could keep them from the bowls/playoffs and lessen their takehome pay? Once the RPI kicks in (as it does for Baseball/Basketball, possibly SB), then you will see better OOC play...otherwise, they will schedule to help them with the W/L schedule

He's in favor of 9-game schedule but when Nick speaks, no one listens - too busy wondering where that index finger is going and worrying about where it's been.

Yeah, typical...keep your pie hole in the PAC-12 (weak **** conference)

Agreed ... but it's still an excuse for the status quo. No one, with the exception of homers, wants to watch Bama vs. Western Carolina or the like.

You know I hate to agree with you, but besides Oregon and Stanford the 12 PAC is not all that good of a football conference, but at least the bottom 7 teams in the 12 PAC are on par with the 7 bottom teams in the SEC!!!

Correction: "the bottom 8 teams in the 12 PAC are on par with the 8 bottom teams in the SEC!!"
