Injured Wing still bound for payday

07:20 AM ET 05.31 | A good number of Red Wings played with injuries, the team revealed Thursday, including Valtteri Filppula. [Filppula] suffered a high ankle sprain and is expected to recover in six to eight weeks, Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said Thursday. Filppula, an unrestricted free agent whom the Wings must sign or lose this offseason, was injured the opening minutes of play in Game 7 against the Blackhawks on a check from the forward Andrew Shaw. Some observers say Shaw used a skate to knock Filppula's feet from under him, a maneuver known as slew-footing. After a disappointing offensive year -- nine goals and eight assists in 41 games -- Filppula is nonetheless likely to be one of the most-sought free agents in a thin market.

You saying Ian is going to play forward? He's not an other worldly player like Brent Burns!

I agree but..

I like Filppula. I've sort of had him in my mind as Datsyuk Light.

But he's seemingly fragile. And he has never really delivered consistently. Bright flashes for sure but no constant glow.

I was ready to offer him and Howard and Abdelkader to Buffalo for Miller and Vanek at the deadline.

What happened...did Buffalo nix the trade?

You're on with bright flashes but inconsistent. I don't see him much as fragile; he's been as injured as anyone else in the regular season, but I don't recall him missing much playoff action...and the Wings have seen plenty of it over the years.

Howard's from New York. He nixed the trade once he heard the city...it's not as nice as Detroit.

Valtteri Filppula isn't going anywhere. He likes it here.

You mean he's not going to Russia to be with Pavel's family?

You sound surprised! Haven't you noticed the pattern in all the previous rounds? A dollar short and a few days late!

The positive side of his injury was Nyquist got extra ice time...and acclimated himself nicely.

No visionaries who think like me involved.

Terrible time to lose a 1st or second line player though.
