08:04 AM ET 06.01 | The Nets have reached out to Jeff Van Gundy about their vacant coaching position, according to a report that neither side would confirm nor deny. Longtime basketball writer Mark Heisler reported Friday on Twitter that "preliminary" discussion had occurred between Van Gundy and the Nets, noting that the former Knicks coach did not immediately turn down the notion of again running a team in New York. It is surprising news, given the sentiment from the end of the season, when a Nets executive said the team had no interest in the outspoken Van Gundy and it was very unlikely he'd be interviewed. As recently as last week, Van Gundy said on the radio that he probably wouldn't return to coaching next season. But the 51-year-old, who has worked as a commentator on ABC/ESPN for six years, reportedly has since been contacted by the Nets and Clippers, who recently canned Vinny Del Negro.

Why would anyone want to go to the Nets? The Coach killer will get you fired.

Larry Brown would be the best selection IMO.

Heisr is an excellent writer.

I think JVG is the best available.

June 1, 2013  09:46 AM ET

JVG is overrated. He hasn't done much w/ the teams he coached. They have underachieved. They had stars and good players on the team but just couldn't get them over the hump... I'd pass on him if I was the nets or clippers.

He took a Knicks team to a finals, got them a lot of wins with marginal talentHe did have talent I Houston, but tmac and yao were always hurt. He's a solid coach

And could grab Mourning around the ankles with the best of them.

If he is the best it doesn't say much for the others. There are very few good coaches in the league. Most of them stink.

That Knicks team was stacked. They had good players w/ a superstar. W/ players he had, he should have done more...

C'mon Bad Arse! I kind of like him in the booth. Especially when he is on camera and is asked a question and there is that 2 second pause where you think he might have died while standing up.

Thank you for saving me the trouble.

There would be no NETs excitement but they would be a good, albeit low scoring team...

Stacked? With who? The only HOFer that has played for the knicks (under JVG) in the past 20 years is Pat. I don't know what Knicks team you were looking at.
