Dwight Howard declines free throw lesson from writer's daughter

11:13 AM ET 06.02 | My daughter, Kelzer, is a mother now with three children, and it's been more than a decade since she spent much time shooting a basketball. But I flew Kelzer in from Arizona to teach Dwight Howard how to shoot free throws because she still has to be better than he is. Who isn't? We all met at UCLA, Howard was as friendly as always and relaxed after fishing trips to Lake Tahoe and Aspen. Howard took the bait. He said he could make more free throws left-handed than she could right-handed. He said he'd donate $5,000 to charity if he was wrong. He was wrong, although after hanging around Howard, Kelzer's shooting percentage plunged. Howard could not have been more gracious in setting himself up for defeat. That's why I like him. He keeps things in perspective, although it seems to bother serious basketball fans and players. "Can't we have some fun?" he shouted, while doing a spot-on goofy imitation of the daughter's shooting motion. He declined Kelzer's offer to help with his shooting technique, saying he will not change the way he shoots free throws this off-season. He'll just shoot more of them.

What the hell? Is this an actual story? And why is Dwight still in Los Angeles? Shouldn't he be in Dallas already getting prepared to win the West next year alongside Dirk, CP3, & OJ Mayo?

My day is now complete reading this touching story

Howard didn't take much advice from a couple of HOF centers, why would he take advice from a non playing mother???

June 2, 2013  01:42 PM ET

Howard hasn't purchased a home in LA yet.

Maybe Dwight should try shooting FTs left-handed in games. Couldn't hurt his percentage at this point

Dwight's should try something called practicing. Someone should explain that term to him.

Good point. Dwight is not going to be a hall of fame center. He doesn't even know where he wants to play. He may never win a title.

Howard takes a lot of heat but he still lead the league in rebounding. Would love to have him on the Celtics along side Rondo.

$$$$$$ is why Boston will not get him.

I hear you. Boston has to make some move for it's fan base. If Pierce walks AND KG retires, it will take a miracle for us to win 30 games. If Howard will even listen to the Hawks, I have to hope Boston could be a player with some creative maneuvering.
