Asante wants to remain Patriot

Asante Samuel said "it's gonna take a lot" to keep him a Patriot. But the 27-year-old unrestricted free agent cornerback, who has spent his five-year career in New England, added that on a scale of 1 to 10, he'd probably rate his chances of coming back a 10. "The fans love me and I love them back," he said. "The organization loves me and, hopefully, we can work it out."

If it's going to take a lot, then he'll be in another uniform. I could be wrong. It's been known to happen. But only key players get the big contracts with the Pats.

Message to Jets.......please do not sign this dope to a huge deal. The crappy 49ers over paid for Clement and he didnt earn a dime of that salary this year. Spend the $$ on pass rushers....and O-line man.....and new linebackers.......and a QB.....and.....oh crap.....next year is gonna s*ck too

February 8, 2008  08:06 AM ET

Pats need the space in the cap for some o line.
If he can get 10 mil a yr in NJ, then go for it.

February 8, 2008  08:07 AM ET

He should go for as much as the market will bear, even if it is on another team.

Some fans hate players who are mercenaries hopping about for the most money they can get. But how much loyalty do people think a team gives a player? One bad season, and many are benched. One too many fumbles in a season, and they get cut. The list goes on. I feel that players should give teams the same loyalty that the teams give the players.

Ownership created the dynamic. Players, offered no security, should offer none in return.

February 8, 2008  08:18 AM ET

Miami could use him, but then again they could use a lot of players.

February 8, 2008  08:21 AM ET

I doubt the Pats pay big for Moss and Samuel. And they still have a top 10 pick they're gonna have to sign unless they trade down.

February 8, 2008  08:26 AM ET

Looks like someone is going to overpay.

February 8, 2008  08:40 AM ET

he will need to turn his uniform and playbook as soon as he returns from the pro bowl game. He is outta there..

February 8, 2008  09:18 AM ET

someone will overpay for this guy.

"The fans love me and I love it here." - Translation.."whoever back up the truck with the most money wins."

Mr. Samuel has at least 2 voicemails...

#1 ."Hello Asante, this is Dan Snyder...as you know, I'm clueless when it comes to fottball, but I have a 9 figure checkbook and I ain't afraid to use it"

#2 - "Mornin, Asante, this is Jerry Jones...why don't you come on down here to Texas. We're getting a new stadium and we have this White House so players can relax and get away from everything..."

February 8, 2008  09:32 AM ET

Of course he wants to "remain a Patriot". If that happens he will be rolling in dough AND be on a great team. Duhh!

February 8, 2008  09:36 AM ET

The Pats probably cost this guy $20 million by slapping the franchise tag on him last year. I doubt he'll take that "Foxborough Minimum Wage" to play in the 2008 season.

February 8, 2008  09:55 AM ET

They do have to choose between him and Moss. Who more important?

February 8, 2008  09:59 AM ET

Next time you have an opportunity to seal a SB win by catching an easy lob thrown right at you by a mediocre quarterback just throwing the ball up for grabs, do it!

Or, if you somehow muff the world's easiest catch, do not laugh it off like you just fumbled a quarter into an open sewer. At least have the decency to claw your eyes out before a national audience.

Otherwise, I don't think the PATS have much incentive to keep you after that luckluster postseason.

February 8, 2008  10:00 AM ET

Well good bye Asante Samuel nice know you, the only way you stay is to take a hometown discount but I don't see that happen.

February 8, 2008  10:03 AM ET

I see it Moss is # 1 and then defense is # 2 mostly the LB core.

February 8, 2008  10:10 AM ET

no, bye. go play for a cellar dweller.

Samuel is worth the money. Hobbs needs to go. Samuel may have dropped the Eli pass but Hobbs has consistently given up yardage to opposing WR's....as well as giving up on that throw to Buress. My opinion both 27 Hobbs and 72 Light........are weak links in Pats offense.
