NHL may adopt mandatory visor rule

03:02 PM ET 06.03 | The NHL and NHL Players Association may be ready to finally institute mandatory visors. Marc Staal's eye injury on March 5 brought up the debate on mandatory visors again and the league's competition committee will discuss the issue at their meeting on Tuesday. Most young players already wear visors so it would not be a big issue for them and the league would likely grandfather the visor requirement in. That would allow current players to play without a visor if they choose while new players would have to wear the visor, avoiding the wrath of the veteran players who are used to playing without a visor and do not want to be dictated to.

I have a better idea...how about a mandatory..."No sticks that flex like a whip" rule?

Or ... how about ... "No more rigid shoulder/elbow pads" rule"

Or ... how about ... "No more instigator" rule?

"No more Jackhole Commisioner" rule.

More equipment...what a joke......the more equipment this sport adds the more vicious the hits and the more severe the injuries become....in the good old days without helmets and gladiator padding players respected each other more especially in vulnerable situations.....and played good old fashioned hockey. ..I miss that a lot.....

Or a mandatory "drop the effing puck" rule for the linesman.

Ok, I get most of your point, but this is laughable. Those guys back in the 50s and 60s went at each other more visciously than now. One of the most typical of that was Mr. Hockey, and he nearly died for not having a helmet.

And let's not forget Wayne Maki and Teddy Green! No, injuries were more vicious back then and worse than today. Players just didn't realize how bad the hits were. I'm ok with eye shields, but not mandatory!

HE double hockey stick NO!

I posted this on an earlier article similar to this: Right now, I believe, there is a rule against starting a fight when wearing a visor. Mandatory visors would then seem like a de facto ban on fighting....unless I am wrong on the rule, or the league were to get rid of the rule.

I like the fact the NHL 'tolerates' fighting, unlike MLB and NFL and NBA where throwing a punch get's a suspension....it's one of the unique things about the sport.
