06:57 AM ET 06.04 | Unlike a good number of active pro athletes, Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie has set himself up as a cautionary tale. By his own count -- and he admits he might be underestimating just how bad it really was -- [Cromartie] went through $5 million in his first two seasons in the NFL. Poof. Just like that. ... "Gone. Just gone," Cromartie said. ... The spending was non-stop: There were nine cars, two expensive homes, piles of jewelry, extravagant gifts and cash. ... But these days, Cromartie's favorite car is a Toyota Prius, a hybrid sedan that many middle class Americans drive. He brags about how little he spends on gas. "I'll fill it up every 2 1/2 weeks or so, and I'm only spending 33 bucks, while everybody else is spending 80 or 90 bucks a tank," he said. "Right now, I'm all about saving money."

A man's personal business, is a man's personal business.

I've got a friend who used to live next door to Cromartie and his wife when they were in California. She said they were reaslly nice people, respectable people. She thinks he matured beyond the mistakes of his past.

It's his money. He went from stimulating women to stimulating the economy.

Perhaps, but he's still got to pay child support for those "mistakes" until they've all matured themselves.

I thought he was all about procreating an entire football team!!

June 4, 2013  08:01 AM ET

At least he figured it out while he is still playing and seems to have learned.

"Hey, Antonio, what are you getting the mistakes for their birthdays?"

And would you say the same about TO, who is broke and can't support his "personal business?"

No, too many guys do the same crap as Cromartie without the resources to deal with the consequences. I suspect Cromartie is driving a Prius because somebody put his financial house in order, created trusts for the kids and put Cromartie himself on an allowance.

Good for him for living within his means, but he's already set a bad example. Too many of the offspring of this kind of "personal business" become burdens on society.

Word. I remember his many many kids.

9 cars? One for each kid, but they're not old enough to drive!

I guess with the Prius he can fit one family at a time

It's a story within itself on how these guys blow through money. Not the first, and surely not the last, I just don't feel comfortable talking up a man's family or kids in that way. That's just me.

Mouths to feed, Bro.

The lamprey fish population in Lake Michigan is being targetted by the Government. They want to control the population.... It's a burden on society too.

And then he traveled east and while doing so pollinating wherever he landed.

I can see your point of view, but with freedom comes responsibility. Cromartie has shown plenty of the former and not so much of the latter. He sets a bad example.
