Bill Callahan to call plays for Cowboys

04:42 PM ET 06.04 | The worst-kept secret in the NFL officially is out. Jerry Jones told reporters Tuesday that offensive coordinator Bill Callahan will handle play-calling duties this season, taking over the role previously held by coach Jason Garrett. Jones said the decision had been made weeks ago. Back in February, Garrett told reporters that a play-calling decision might not come until after the Cowboys' first preseason game. That seemed odd at the time, and it turned out not to be the case. Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram said Callahan later "reluctantly" confirmed his new role, saying he wanted to defer to Garrett on the move becoming official.

Jerry implies...

Callahan confirms...

Jason hems and haws...

These are dark times for us Cowboys fans.

Jerry on Romo being around for the veterans minicamp...

"It's probably unlikely, again, I know I said probably unlikely, but it's still, probably unlikely..."

I am insane now.

How 'bout those Pens?

Note to Jerry...

Just quit sucking!

Just what Garrett needs, a former head coach taking away the baby that has been his for 6 years.

I'm sure Jerry told him how this is going to make things better, but it will be looked at as a vote of no confidence by the players.

LMAO!!!!

The NFC circus equivalent of the Jets.

Why let this get out? Just let Callahan call the plays and be done with it. Now, this will hang over the franchise whether they do good or bad this season.

June 4, 2013  11:15 PM ET

Good. Callahan is an offensive line guy so I'm assuming he understands the importance of a running game.

Unlike, say, former QB Jason Garrett who completely forgot that you don't have to pass on every play.

Could be wrong but I think it's part of Jerry's plan to "make things very uncomfortable for everyone around Valley Ranch".

Not saying I agree with it, but I know JJ said he's gonna light a fire under some folks and I think some of the recent stuff (publicly announcing he's taking away play calling duties from Garrett, publicly saying Romo needs to start putting in more hours, etc) is what JJ was referring to.

I actually feel more hope about the 2013 season than pretty much any other season since the glory days of the 90's.

JJ's usual unwise spending sprees have been hamstrung by a lack of cap space and there's actually a bit of continuity amongst the players and coaching staff.

And no crazy, stupid new free agents like TO.

I'd forgotten about that statement at the end of last season. Well, hope his plan works out. They do well and it will be 'why didn't they do this earlier'. They do bad and it will be 'what the hell were they thinking'? He's just attracted the microscope.

That's one leg knocked off Jason's stool.

That's true. Then again, Jerry loves the microscope so he deserves whatever he gets.

That said, as a Cowboys fan I definitely hope it works.

Deservedly so.

Garrett had too much on his plate. Addition by subtraction, IMO.

Doesn't seem like it to me. Seems like there have been a ton of changes this offseason in Big D.
