Verizon, NFL announce extension to stream games

05:44 PM ET 06.04 | Verizon is close to taking the lid off a four-year, $1B extension of its NFL rights. The deal, which will allow Verizon to stream every NFL regular-season and playoff game to mobile phones, should forever obliterate the distinction between sponsor and media-rights deals. Its previous deal gave Verizon subscribers access to live games schedules from ESPN, NBC and NFL Network. But this new deal adds in the CBS and Fox Sunday afternoon schedules plus the playoffs. It comes just two weeks after the league signed a five-year, $400M deal with Microsoft. Pointedly, the massive Verizon deal does not include the rights to stream NFL games to tablets ??? only ???mobile phones,??? which is certain to lead to fights over what is considered a phone. The league likely will have to resolve the difference between dedicated tablets, like iPads, and hybrid devices, like Samsung???s popular Galaxy.

I'll bet Apple would pay a few bucks to stream the games through their store.

So they are going to limit the streaming to devices whose screen makes it too small to see what's going on?

Verizon told us we can have their new basic plan of 1500 minutes. I pointed out that we only make two calls a month and only need 200 so charge us accordingly but they said no. You get 1500 minutes and buddy your paying for it.
Seriously its time congress steps in and does something about this crap. Why do I have to pay for a ton of minutes I don't need or want.

Right now they look at it like ... you can have 3 sizes of french fries. But even if the smallest order is still too much, they're not gonna try to dictate sizes and prices.

This comment is akin to Bloomberg trying to limit the size of soft drinks. Keep Uncle Sugar out of it. If you don't like the phone plan, don't buy it.

I'm a month away from the end of my Verizon contract and I'm going somewhere cheaper. Like fubar said, a few calls a month and texts is what I do. Watch an NFL game on my smartphone? I think my 50" is starting to be too small after seeing the 70" and 80" panels in Costco last week.

Good information but got a little too techy at the end bro.

Overpriced plans. I hate Verizon.

I'm sure they would hate you too, given the opportunity.

You don't "have to". Go with another carrier. People b8%ching about optional purchases are a joke. They offer those plans because YOU pay it.
