07:15 AM ET 06.06 | The clock ticks for Mark Streit, but it seems the end nears for him on Long Island. [Two] sources already have told Newsday that the Islanders' captain will not return to the team next season. Streit, 35, had spoken of wanting to return as the 2013 season wound down, but he and the Islanders are far apart in contract requirements with the July 5 start of free agency looming. According to a source, the Islanders offered Streit a three-year deal worth about $5 million a season, but Streit is looking for north of $5.5 million per season. With the free-agent market for defensemen very thin, Streit could command $6 million per year and even possibly get a four-year deal.

Captain D is right here in TOR. Come get em, NYI

We will send him your way AND take an upcoming nasty contract negotiation off your hands as well (JT).

You're welcome

Nice player...good powerplay QB...but not at 6 mill/year.

JT's signed for another 5 years lol. As much as i'd love it, I think the guy's an Islander for life. If the Leafs should be serious about any centre right now, it should be Malkin, followed by (ugh) Thornton.

Bleah, thought he was RFA after next year.

I am very undecided on Malkin. I would much rather have a team built for the playoffs, then a team made up of regular season superstars (see VCR).

I am not convinced Geno is the guy at crunch time.

And if you put him with Phil (future Hart and Smythe winner), you would need a big banger on the other wing. Not sure who TOR has that would fit that description at the present.

His plus/minus numbers have been terrible the last 2 years.

Not like he's ever won a Conn Smythe or any other large silver chalice before...

Thanks for interjecting some sense into the To***to love-in thread of the day GB.

For his age and declining skill set, I think a 3 year $15M offer is more than generous.

Someone will outrageously over pay for him though given the market for a D man this off-season.

Darren Dreger is tweeting that Geno could get $15 mil per year tax-free in the KHL.

LMAO

You're killing me

Which GM, besides Holmgren, is going to give $6M for 4 years to a 35 year old defenseman? Take the $5M from the Isles.

And 35 looking for a 4-year contract?? That is a LOT of risk, as that's guaranteed cap hit even if he retires.

So we found the perfect pairing: Pronger-Streit.

Sounds like a law firm devoted to injury lawsuits.

Absolutely...they have money to spare since they spend it on guys not playing for them (TT)just to reach the cap floor.
