07:23 AM ET 06.07 | The Blues' Andy McDonald had thought about walking away before. [McDonald] called his announcement Thursday to retire from the NHL because of concussion concerns a sigh of relief. In a 12-year career that included the past six with the Blues, McDonald suffered five documented concussions "and double that in my opinion where I never missed time and in a lot of situations I never told anybody," he said. ... As recently as two weeks ago, he spoke about returning for the 2013-14 season, although it would likely not have been with the Blues. "When the season was initially over, I was intending on playing again," McDonald said. "I was motivated by the results of the season and how I struggled."

Yep. Great guy, solid player, but get out and don't risk another one that might be worse.

You just hope that 20 years from now he still has his marbles intact.

Damn good guy.

We're losing too many damned good players to rigid shoulder and elbow pads. Will the NHL and NHLPA ever pull their heads out of their collective arses and address this issue? I think they're too concerned about players whose stick touches somebody's hands or mid-section to care about anything else.

Retirement a relief for Canada

I for one cannot wait for this headline about Bob Cole. So nice for TSN to give up the rights to the Hawks/Kings series and inflict Bob Cole on us once again. I'm sure he's still calling the third period of last nights game. You'd think a guy that learned his craft from Moses would be a little better.

It's either that ... or ... the father of Sloppy Seconds. Close your eyes and you'd swear you're listening to Kermit the Frog.

News of his retirement in theory should make me happy, as he's been a thorn in the Red Wings side lo these many years, but I've always liked him. He's one of those guys on a team you hate that you just can't help but respect. Sad news he's retiring.

There was one game in particular during the Ducks Cup run where he was just insane

June 7, 2013  11:10 AM ET

Like he's not going to be but the tip of the small talented athelete iceberg that will leaving this Nat Ho BU**SH** League? Much sooner than later. Scrambled is the new over-easy street.

That's right son, it used to be how many goals you got that decided who won the game, but now we have a different formula every year. Next year we'll be dividing the number of penalty minutes minus the time anyone on the roster is supended, plus the shootout score to miss ratio by the total number of players that actuallly finish the game, and if that works out less than a single integer, viola a second shootout - should work out justin greatzky shamlyhan bettwinkle. FOO-S-A, FOO-S-A, FOO-S-A.

Of course probably wouldn't see him anymore. But the other Wings killer will be waiting in NY, Nash.
