Worst free agent class ever

07:22 AM ET 06.07 | Soon -- inside a month, in fact -- the day so many fans look forward to will dawn. However, this summer's crop of talents-for-hire (starting July 5) is anything but a trigger for frenzy. Worst free agent class ever? Unless you're a member of it, the answer is yes. Don't believe me? Try this on for size: based on point production, the five best UFA forwards are Mike Ribeiro, Pascal Dupuis, Patrik Elias, Jaromir Jagr and Michael Ryder (average age: 35.6). The top UFA defensemen are Mark Streit, Ron Hainsey, Rob Scuderi, Andrew Ference and Marek Zidlicky. The best UFA goalies are Nicklas Backstrom, Mike Smith and Evgeni Nabokov. And that's only if none of them sign extensions in June.

Ugh. No help for anyone here

Other than goalie, I'd pass on all of them.

Smith is the 2013 version of Raycroft. No help there either.

BTW Danny, I hope you dont read The Star. Cox's column yesterday and Feschuks today are 2 of the most ridiculous pieces of drivel I have ever read, and given the sources, that is saying something.

I'd take Ference. And I hope Ribeiro stays. He's asking for at least 4 years though. Too old.

Hopefully the buyout crop will be better.

Many that don't get an offer can apply for Social Security

i don't get the appeal of Smith...and we know what happened the ;ast time a goalie left Phoenix for a free agent deal (pre-weekend Philly tweak)

I'd take Scuderi and Ference.

pretty solid goalie, certainly not top 5, but certainly an upgrade for some teams

I would too. Tough backend guys. --did I just leave myself open to some comments?

Outside of the big two, last year sucked too...and look how that worked out for the Wild. What'd they pay out this year to those two, $30 or 40 million?

What I do know is that Bickell has played himself into some nice money. That db is playing lights out.

Side comment on being a Kings fan; 36 months ago I would have been high fiving to make the playoffs, this morning I wake up bummed because we are down 3-1 in the Conference Finals and now not likely to make a return trip to the Finals. This is only the third time in history they have gone this far and it feels like a lost year.

Weak free agent market , but likely a strong 'fire sale" market with the cap dropping , and a very strong draft class. It all balances out. HAPPY FRIDAY ALL !! Self imposed half day work day today....tick tick tick tick
