Yasiel Puig toiled before becoming overnight sensation

10:54 AM ET 06.08 | Yasiel Puig is an unlikely baseball phenom. His parents are engineers who hoped their son would attend college as they did. But once Puig started playing baseball at 9, he says, he never considered anything else as a career. A little more than a year ago Puig was stewing in his parents' home in the coastal town of Cienfuegos, upset at being suspended from Cuba's top baseball league for attempting to flee the country. Since then, he has embarked on a whirlwind odyssey in which he has been transformed. Once exiled from baseball, he's now a multimillionaire; once virtually unknown, he's now an overnight sensation. "Everything is different," Puig says in Spanish. The consensus in baseball was that the Dodgers grossly overpaid when they signed Puig to a seven-year, $42-million contract last June. Skeptics noted there was little known about him and not much of a track record against tough competition. Opinions about him remain varied. Though Puig was the best player in all of spring training this year according to one National League scout, a well-read list of the game's top 100 prospects excluded him. Even Dodgers officials were cautious. They downplayed the significance of his promotion to the major leagues, which happened only because outfielders Matt Kemp and Carl Crawford sustained injuries.

the A's paid 35 millions 5 year deal for Cespedes, the dodgers pay to PUIG 42 millions, and there is a good reason WHY,,,,both players are talented no doubt about it,

June 8, 2013  12:06 PM ET

the question is,,,,,should the dodgers send back to the minors this hitter PUIG?? i think it would be the wrong move why??because crawfford and kemp aren't playing good baseball,at least not now!!!!

They'll need to move Ethier then because there's no way they leave his salary on the bench.

True. The Giants don't help their players cover these things up. The Dodger organization should learn such integrity.

Yeah...because no player in the history of baseball who seemed too good to be true ever subsequently turned out to be juicing...****

Come on dude, get real!!!! Just because Puig is hotter than hell right now, doesn't mean he is juicing!!!! You shouldn't go around accusing players of taking drugs, if you don't know for sure. IMO, that is not very classy!!! Would you like it, if anyone said "williewilliejuan, how many pisstests have you failed"????

A.) They can ask me any question they want.

B.) From BALCO to Biogenesis, anyone who doesn't view unexpected performance in today's MLB with an air of skepticism is either incredibly naive or dumber than a box of rocks. Not even cool rocks like igneous or metamorphic. Sedimentary rocks - widely acknowledged as the dumbest of all rocks.

Okay, so we should assume, that "all" baseball players are juicing??? Is that right???

I don't work at a job that requires them.

So... no. Never failed a test. Not even a paternity one.
